internet suckers
The old saying, "There's a sucker born every minute," seems especially apropos in the Internet age...sadly, I've found this allows things like urban legends and outright lies to propagate and even come back from the dead in zombie fashion. Questions with bad premises and false assertions continue to discourage people years (in some cases, you could argue centuries) after they were first answered and put to rest. But, mostly, for every refutation you can always find a counter-refutation; and for every item of good news there is a corresponding article to tell you why the good news was actually a lie or belying something bad.
