Five New Books, Hooray

That's what I've decided to limit myself to a month as an economy measure -- five books and two magazines.  Otherwise I'll have books climbing up the walls and magazines lying around half read for months.

Why We Suck: a feel good guide to staying fat, loud, lazy and stupid, by Dr. Denis Leary.  I'll admit it, tho I love Denis Leary I mainly bought this book to find out if he really is a "dr." or if he's just being funny.

The Junior Officers' Reading Club: killing time and fighting wars, by Patrick Hennessey.  I generally don't read about soldiers or war, even as a kid I avoided the subject and as an adult I get enough of that working for the DoD.  Besides, I have plenty of other ways to get depressed.  However, I love reading about reading, and about reading clubs so this proved irresistible.

Vampire Taxomony: identifying and interacting with the modern day bloodsucker, by Meredith Woerner.  This also proved irresistible on the mind candy level and, yes, Karen, you can read it when I'm done.

The Wettest County in the World, by Matt Bondurant.  A novel based on the lives of the author's father and uncles who were a gang of roughnecks and moonshiners in Prohibition Virginia.  The title came from Sherwood Anderson's description of the place when he was covering a story there.

Poisoned Pens: literary invective from Amis to Zola, edited by Gary Dexter.  Something to satisfy my malicious side -- the bitchy comments of jealous writers about their competitors.
