Dad's Books

I met my stepmother Wendy for dinner last Wednesday, and got 3 boxes of books she'd cleared out of their home office.  Some of the books were donations from their church for our base library (constantly in need of new books since the sailors tend to carry off whatever book they're currently reading), and some were Dad's books that she thought I'd like.  I went thru them today and kept:

The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table, by Oliver Wendell Holmes

Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchell (Dad's favorite novel and favorite movie, this is a good hardbound copy with one of those little ribbon bookmarks attached)

The Bean Trees, by Barbara Kingsolver

Asking for the Moon, by Reginald Hill

In the Teeth of the Evidence, by Dorothy L. Sayers

Butterflies of the World, by Alexander B. Klots (going straight to Delores, my friend with the butterfly fetish)

I'd read Gone with the Wind years ago, but knowing how much Dad loved this book I opened it intending to thumb thru and landed immediately on the page about Gerald O'Hara's funeral.  Even I can take that hint, so I've put GWTW aside for my bedtime reading.

And I've finally admitted defeat with those English essays and put them aside to join Moby Dick in the small pile of books I just can't finish.
