Fallen, or the Story of Children Thrown like Seeds from Heaven
When the first child came tumbling down, they called it a miracle. “From God!” they said, “A prophet!” And as the infant grew larger and began producing garbled speech of coos and vowels, they declared his words the language of the Lord. Scribes kept record of the child’s utterances in large volumes, reproducing the texts and sending them to universities and monasteries across six continents.
The afternoon of the babe’s first steps, other children followed, dropping down like acorns into sheets stretched wide. Infertile women fell to their knees begging the heavens to deliver. Churches counted record attendance.
The rain continued for seventy-two hours. As the second day drew to a close, the demand for parents became overwhelming, as did the drop-offs at hospitals. Collection crews could no longer gather the fallen babes quickly enough to accommodate the clogging drains and halted highways. Mothers left their new children at fire stations and grocery stores.
They estimate that over the three-day period, over forty thousand children fell to earth.
“All these babies, and nowhere for them to go,” they said. “It’s the work of the Devil.”
