Last night my grandmother called my mom crying and complaining about pain in her back. Recently she had been diagnosed with a compression fracture in her spine and was doing various treatments and what not. The only thing she refused to do is take any pain pill because she didn't like how she felt on the drugs. We tell her that the pills could be split and that she did not have to take the whole thing if she didn't feel like it was necessary. She refused because the doctor never said she could do that nor would she take any other over the counter pill because her doctor hadn't prescribed it. We finally got her doctor to write a script for a regular over the counter drug and she still would not take it for the same reason as before.
While driving to grams mom was unable to get back up with her so she called an ambulance. My mom gets to the apartment and gram is pissed that an ambulance was called because, "those fine young gentlemen have far more important things to do". Since she is still in pain the ambulance takes her in.
Mom packs gram a bag of clothes and what not and proceeds to the hospital where she stays for 8 hours while they do tests. Gram is finally admitted so that she can have a room and more tests can be done this morning. Mom comes home, sleeps for 2 hours, and goes to work.
The hospital calls my mom at work and tells her that is wasn't the fracture that was causing the pain but a pulmonary embolism! A massive one! Mom said she saw the scan and had no idea how my gram was still alive. They asked if she would come to the hospital right away because they were going to need her to sign a bunch of papers. And that is where she has been all day. The doctors say gram will be on massive blood thinners for a while and can't leave the hospital but she is doing well and has been complaining about the sheets not being soft enough. I will update when i have more info!
