Yes, I do.

And yourself?

Never to turn a blind eye to evil. To protect the weak from harm. To do whatever is in my power to ensure that justice is done.

That may be so. If there's something you want to accomplish or attain, or devote yourself to, that would be a dream.

[there's a pause as he thinks this over; his previous dream had been quite similar, painfully similar even, and in the end it fell apart right before his feet though the wreckage was caused by his own ignorance among other things.

but still. a dream is a dream, right?]

that's a very noble dream.
but lofty as well.
after all
justice is very subjective
is it not?
what i perceive as righteousness may be the ultimate sin to you
and vice-versa.

is that truly all a dream is?
it sound so simple.
if even humans can dream then it should be nothing for me
and yet
i still feel as though such a thing is outside my grasp as i am now.

[does this person see in black and white? N is hardly concerned; he himself still barely sees in color.]

I serve the people as a judge. My dream is also my job. It is not simple, but those accused who come before me in court will be viewed as impartially as I can manage, and I will take every pain to ensure that their sentences are fair and just.

My work is not subjective. I am guided by the law, which has developed over centuries. It it is true that the law has its flaws, but no dream and no justice is perfect in its realization. As I said, I do whatever is in my power. I do not always succeed.

[He isn't going to mention the part where he's sworn to kill every violent criminal who escapes the justice of the court, because he never does. That part of him is separate, never spoken of.]

Are you not human, then? If what you wish is the ability to dream, would that not be the dream?

[as the former leader of an organized crime group, N has a hard time accepting the law as anything but an arbitrary will ripe for manipulating and taking advantage of. granted, his understanding of it is as base as a child's, and his concept of right and wrong is virtually nonexistent-- and this man clearly knows what he's talking about.

N decides to keep the All I Know About the Law is How to Break It jokes to a minimum. not that he knows anything about jokes but-- well. you know.]

i see
admittedly
the world i am from is incredibly peaceful
i think you would like it
there are a few conflicts here and there
which is to be expected of humans
but it seems to me like the good people outweigh and outmatch the bad ones

[a little obvious, but it was stated more for his own sake than anything.]

i know not what i am anymore
but i truly do wish to find a dream of my own someday
and there are still many things in my home world i need to do.
if the desire alone is all it takes for a goal to become a dream
then perhaps i do have one after all

[It's probably for the best not to mention involvement in organized crime to Yuri, in any case. He has devoted his life to setting criminals on fire fighting crime, not that he would take any action without being sure of the situation, and it's his moderate side that is expressing itself now.

He would have enjoyed living in a peaceful world. In a peaceful world, he could have been a peaceful man, instead of what he became. But there's no sense dwelling on such things.]

I would very much like to see such a world. My world is not peaceful, and so, my work is never done. There are many good people, but they must be protected from the violent, the evil; and those who do evil must be protected from themselves.

[He is not quite human himself, not only because of the mutation that gave him his powers, but because he privately considers himself, in some ways, a vessel for justice rather than an individual.]

I think I can understand that. The wish to discover a lasting dream for yourself, and those things you need to do, they can be ( ... )

i cannot comprehend such a thing
i must admit.
a world that is not peaceful?

[minus the whole organized crime leader almost taking over the country thing, unova is totally peaceful.]

it is surprising
and yet unsurprising given human nature.
when i look at it like that
it's no wonder other worlds need people like you.

[N's respect for yuri just went up 5 points!!]

you know what?
i believe the same the same thing.
passion and conviction are things i'm not short on
so who's to say these simple wants can't be dreams?
i definitely understand now.

thank you for taking the time to respond to me.

[His own city is rife with crime, and it has affected every part of his life. It transformed him. It's hard for him to clearly imagine a world without it, even though he works toward such a vision.]

Human nature can be very ugly. You and the people of your world are fortunate not to know what that is like. I am glad you have that peace. I hope that I do serve the members of my community well and bring my world at least a little closer to that peacefulness. That is my greatest dream.

[He dreams of wiping out the violence and evil; as impossible as that may be, it will not stop him.]

If you have true passion and conviction, you are fortunate in that as well. They can be difficult to find. [Some might not consider Yuri fortunate, but he is devoted to serving justice as he does, in spite of the drawbacks and the personal sacrifices he's made. He admires such strong ideals in others, even when they are not the same as his own ideals.] You're welcome. I'm pleased to have been of some assistance. My name is Yuri Petrov.
