From the time when he was twelve years old, Allen Walker never questioned whether or not people had souls. Mana's curse ended that debate before it had ever really begun. Or, perhaps, the Earl's visit had, and Mana simply never allowed him to forget. The first time he saw the soul inside an akuma, he had been so terrified, he had not slept for two nights. His master finally had had to knock him out, lest insomnia make him completely useless. Upon awakening -- also his master's doing -- Allen had learned what, exactly, Mana had done to him.

Allen wished, sometimes, he was able to see the souls of regular people as easily, before they were imprisoned by well-intentioned loved ones. Then, he might understand the Noah better; know for sure whether Road Kamelot was truly evil or simply misled. And which side of Tykki Mikk was the real one.

He'd be able to know for sure that Kanda was not simply a bastard who liked killing things. Whether Lavi really had a heart or was just pretending. Allen had faith, perhaps an overabundance of it, but only a fool would turn down proof of that faith.

He could look in the mirror and be certain that -- even if he became the Fourteenth Noah -- at his core, he was still the same Allen he always had been.

That sort of reassurance might soften Mana's fury, though. Solace was not meant to be found in punishment, only penance.

Faith would have to be enough.

The title comes from Ruth Fulton Benedict: "[Faith] is the virtue of the storm, just as happiness is the virtue of sunshine."
