In the Eastern Orthodox Tradition, Fools for Christ have a special place. This consoles me much. I am at least a bit of a Fool for Christ... The Fool is "on the margin of organized society, in the midst of the world yet not of it." The Fool "cannot be exploited, for he has no ambition." The words "game" and "play" are at the center of this spiritual approach. The Fool is the friend of the poor and the outcast, those rejected by the "respectable." Fools are unusual and eccentric, behaving in ways that are interpreted by many as bizarre or downright mad. "The Fool seeks the way of humility and humiliation." St. Paul wrote, "If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise." Metanoia means a change of mind "-not a feeling of guilt, but an entire transposition of priorities, a radically new understanding. The Fool is in this sense par excellence the one who has repented." The Fool is "a living witness... to the possibility of the impossible." In his person, the Fool mocks those who are pompous, self-satisfied and humorless. The Fool brings peace to the world by mocking its so-called values. "As a child before the divine, he plays. The Fool expresses something present in all of us as children, something all too often killed as we grow up, which we need to rediscover and bring back to life. But if the fool plays, he is also serious; his laughter is close to tears, for he is sensitive to the tragedy in this world as well as to the comedy."

The Fool yearns to imitate the Divine Fool, Christ. "When His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, 'He is out of His mind'" (Mark 3:21).

The Fool has nothing to lose, he is free, he is willing to suffer to be compassionate and humble. Thus God can use one's infirmities or predisposition for a holy purpose...

reminded me of this song, "God's own fool" by michael card

/it seems i've imagined him all of my life / as the wisest of all of mankind / for if God's holy wisdom seems foolish to man / he must've seemed out of his mind /
/ for even his family said he was mad / and the priests said "a demon's to blame" / for God in the form of this angry young man / could not have seemed perfectly sane /
// when we in our foolishness thought we were wise / he played the fool and he opened our eyes / when we in our weakness believed we were strong / he became helpless to show we were wrong / and so we follow God's own fool / for only the foolish can tell / believe the unbelievable / come be a fool as well //
/ so come lose your life for a carpenter's son / for a "madman" who died for a dream / and you'll have the faith his first followers had / and you'll feel the weight of the beam /
/ so surrender the hunger to say you must know / have the courage to say "i believe" / the power of paradox opens our eyes / and blinds those who say they can see /
// when we in our foolishness thought we were wise / he played the fool and he opened our eyes / when we in our weakness believed we were strong / he became helpless to show we were wrong / and so we follow God's own fool / for only the foolish can tell / believe the unbelievable / come be a fool as well //

You Are 19 Years Old

19

Under 12: You are a kid at heart. You still have an optimistic life view - and you look at the world with awe.

13-19: You are a teenager at heart. You question authority and are still trying to find your place in this world.

20-29: You are a twentysomething at heart. You feel excited about what's to come... love, work, and new experiences.

30-39: You are a thirtysomething at heart. You've had a taste of success and true love, but you want more!

40+: You are a mature adult. You've been through most of the ups and downs of life already. Now you get to sit back and relax.

What Age Do You Act?

how oddly appropriate, as i am, in fact, 19. ^_^

i think i had rather have the world call me a fool, than love me for bending to its standards. i shall laugh, and weep, as i choose, and for whomever i choose. i shall be kind to those who do not warrant kindness, and i shall love those who give me no reason to love them. i will watch spongebob squarepants and napoleon dynamite and irresponsible captain tylor (an anime) and law & order: criminal intent with equal fervor. i will read comic books, i will play roleplaying games, i will write angsty poetry and draw silly comics. i will write, and i will touch people's hearts. i will make people laugh. that's what i want to do with my life. i want to make people laugh. and wherever God sends me, i know that I will.

if i can do these things, i think i will not mind myself too much. i will be eccentric, and a fool, and i shall be a merry fool indeed.

χάρις ‘υμιν καί ’ειρήνη
grace to you all, and peace
