and I lose your hand through the waves
the ocean - the bravery

They were supposed to be at a pep rally today, Lilly smiling too much just for the sake of smiling, Veronica grinning in return. Lilly's enthusiasm was always, always infectious.

Instead, she's standing in the front of a group of mourner's at a cemetery, black cotton dress sticking to the backs of her knees. She's focusing on how uncomfortable the new material feels scratching at her legs, how she wishes that it would rain so that the weather would cool down, how she wishes that piece of hair would stop falling in front of her face, instead of fighting back the pressure of the tears she feels building behind her eyes, and how much she wishes she were anywhere but here.

Because here means that Lilly Kane is dead. Here means her best friend is lying in that coffin in front of her, and here means that she will never see Lilly smile again.

Here is not some place she wants to be.

Her parents have come out of necessity only; the whispers are already following the sheriff everywhere he goes, accusations and a tangled web of truths and lies that has only just begun to unravel itself.

Duncan won't speak to her, won't even look at her. His eyes are blank, only staring straight ahead. Logan is standing with his hand on Duncan's shoulder, eyes constantly flashing between Lilly's coffin and Veronica's face. She can read the questions there: wondering if the whispers about her father are true, wondering if she'll stand by her father or her friends, wondering why she's the only one who isn't crying.

Answer: she just doesn't have anything left to give.

Contrary to popular belief, Lilly's favorite flower was not, in fact, a lily - close though. Veronica steps up to the coffin and whispers a quiet goodbye, before throwing her flower into the open grave. The brilliant orange of the blooming tiger lily stands out in stark contrast against the gleaming, white grain of the wood, and she continues to stare down, down into the ground, until long after the service is over.

There's only three of them now, she, Logan, and Duncan, standing at a triangle around Lilly's grave. There should be four, and she almost laughs, because technically, the four of them are together, for what will probably be the very last time.

Duncan simply stands, that same blank look on his face, a tiger lily still clutched tightly in his fist. A clash of thunder echoes overhead and Logan looks up as the rain starts to fall.

Ironic, Veronica thinks, as the tears finally spill over.
