"I can hardly even organize my socks."

Jul 09, 2004 20:17

Watching (and screencapping) B5 fifth season episodes. I wish I knew if there were some sort of B5 compendium, because I'm getting an irrational urge to look up all sock references.

(For the record, the subject is a Garibaldi quote. "The Paragon of Animals", 3m 3 sec. See "Babylon Squared" for reasons this sends me into fangirl giggles.)

My husband just put B5 on our DVD list (we're doing a Netflix type thing). He's always wanted to see the show, but quickly realized that you had to watch it from the beginning.

So now we will. I guess I should be looking forward to it?

I'm sort of incredibly biased (B5 crossed my path when I was the Golden Age of SF), but yes. Some of it's terrible in that grand old SF fashion ("Infection" and the standalone "B" plot in "Gray 17 is Missing"), a lot of it's pretty good, and sometimes it's mindblowing (yay S3! other than the Zarg).

I don't want to get your expectations up, because the first season tends to be kind of campy, and the effects are fairly terrible, but if you can cope with the c. 1993 computer effects, tinny dialog and occasional bout of bad acting, there's some interesting standalone plots, good dialog, and some really cool long-term development.

hmm.. doesn't sound too bad for a scifi tv show! I mean, I like the original Star Trek pretty well! (though never a big fan) :-P

Actually, my husband seems to be intrigued especially in the long term development part, so we'll probably end up watching a lot of B5!

How many seasons are there?

How many seasons are there?

Five. At the dawn of time (1993 or so) Joe Straczynski said, "I have a five year arc" and he got it.

You mean there are people out there who don't know that there are five seasons, that Joe Straczynski is cool like Neil Gaiman, or... or...

(See? This show makes me eternally twelve. Early obsession is hard to shake.)

Why aren't you a big fan of the original ST series?

Five seasons? Sounds good! And planned in advance? Even better!!

That means there's a complete storyline/arc? Very cool!

Uh, sorry, is that a hanging offense? Shouldn't've 'fessed up then. I'm just, in general, not a big fan of SciFi/Fantasy TV or movies. But I do tend to enjoy them if I watch them. They tend to be very plot based and my interest is very character based. I love well-characterized SciFi/Fantasy books -- go Lois!! :-)

Actually, I've never really been a "fan" of anything, at least what I'm discovering "fan" means by being on the Bujold list. Closest was Buffy (didn't miss an episode, but that's about it there) and later becoming a member of said Bujold list.

It is. At least, I think it is. *G*

Not around here! I, ah, haven't seen more than about three eps in my entire life. My introduction to the original series cast was through the movies. I was just curious.

I think there's "fan" in the sense of liking something, and there's "fan" in the sense of being part of the fannish community. You can definitely be the former without being the latter. Sometimes all you want is to enjoy the book, TV series, whatever, without becoming involved in rehashing every point.

Good to know! :-)

I think I've always been the former. I've only recently been dipping into the latter, and I'm not that into anything. Well, except maybe neurons! Just kidding, that's my work stuff. :-)
