Summary: Up in the bell tower, high above the town, one lone boy rang the bells. One lone boy watched those who passed by on the streets below. One lone boy fell in love with another boy whose smile lit up his dark world.
Early morning light filled the small kitchen when Taemin walked in, breakfast wafting through the air. He smiled a little at Key who was standing near the stove with a hot frying pan. Taemin had gotten in some minor trouble with his hyungs the night before, but it was nothing he couldn't talk his way out of. They understood that the youngest would need to stay out of the rain when he forgot both his jacket and umbrella, but he could have at least called.
"Key-hyung... I have to get to school early this morning for... a... group meeting!" He nodded at the end, smiling nervously, hoping that Key wouldn't be able to see through his lie. "And I'll be home at five this afternoon... because... I'm tutoring someone on the piano..." He felt suddenly nervous, know that Key would be the only person to see through his lies.
Key's eyes quickly cut to the side, eying him skeptically. "Are you going to eat on the way?" It seemed like he would let it slip by. He was looking through Taemin so easily, it was almost scary. "I'll pack you some breakfast you can carry and eat at the school."
Before Taemin could even open his mouth to protest, Key began preparing a plate filled with food before wrapping it to keep it warm and putting it in his hands. "You better be home at five o'clock mister or you're grounded." Key gave Taemin a stern look as Jonghyun walked into the kitchen, wiping at his eyes, trying to erase the last bits of sleep.
"Oh let him have a little freedom Key. Wasn't it you who used to sneak out at night so we could go c-" Jonghyun was cut off with a spatula to his head. "Ow!"
"Don't even go there!"
"What happened to respecting your hyungs?!" Jonghyun's mouth hung open as he rubbed the spot on his head that was hit only moments before. Taemin ignored the rest of the yelling as he walked out of the house, laughing. He had on his own jacket and Minho's was tucked under his arm.
Taemin felt extremely excited as he practically ran down the street, his feet moving quickly on his own accord. The night before he couldn't stop thinking about the bell keeper and how many questions he had. He almost lost sleep because of it, but eventually the last tolling of the late night bells lulled him into a comfortable sleep. When he first woke up that morning, he started to think about what lie he could make up so he could simply see Minho again.
When he rounded the corner onto the street that the bell tower was on, he immediately slowed down, taking deep breaths to calm his racing heart and blushing cheeks. He walked towards the old door, looking around and double checking no one was paying attention to him before he slowly crept inside the door slowly. He wasn't sure if Minho saw him coming or not, but he was definitely sure he wouldn't be unwelcome.
Then he headed straight up the stairs, the jacket in one hand and the plate of food in the other. Taemin walked faster than he did the previous afternoon and walked straight into the bell tower. "Minho-hyung?" he called, stepping in the actual room slowly. He looked around and his eyes fell on Minho who was leaning against the window sill, facing him.
"Taemin-ah... why are you here so early?" He looked concerned and then somewhat confused. "You're earlier than normal." So the bell keeper did know his schedule. When Taemin should feel weird or exposed, he just felt oddly protected. Someone else other than his hyungs was watching over him.
He bowed out of respect and smiled widely. "I wanted to bring by your jacket and a bit of breakfast that Key made..." He stepped towards Minho and handed him the thing material jacket. The night before he had slept with it beneath his head, the warm scent of Minho lulling him partially to sleep. He didn't want to hand it over, but he did so anyway. Then he balanced the plate of still warm food on the window sill delicately and unwrapped it. He held up two plastic forks that he had snagged at a food joint on the way there.
The two new friends began to eat together, for a long while just making idle chatter before Taemin worked up the nerve to ask the question that was nagging him at the back of his mind. "Hyung?"
Minho looked up, his eyes wide as a fork hung from his mouth. "Hm?"
"Can I stop by this afternoon? I... I want to be here when you toll the bells... I-If it's alright with you." Taemin was a bright red as he looked away and down on the view over the city. It was a breath taking sight, but it didn't squelch his nervousness any.
Minho let a smile crinkle his eyes into slits and tug his cheeks into round mounds of flesh. "Of course you can Taemin-ah. I'd be glad to have you here."
Taemin felt his nerves flare for a moment then dissipate as they continued on with their simple breakfast. It wasn't long before Taemin was heading off to school with the promise to return to Minho that afternoon in a hurry. He just hoped nothing would get in the way and keep him from getting there in time. It was a ten minute walk from his school to the bell tower and he was let out ten minutes before the hour. He would just have to run like his life depended on it. But he would make it back to Minho.
