I'm not certain there is a good reason for foreign intervention in others' politics.
When the U.S. gets involved in others' conflicts it can be very problematic.
What sort of Gov't are we supporting in a given country?
Is it a good Gov't?
or just the enemy of our enemy?
There are long term implications to short term goals.
I contend that usual it's getting involved in such conflicts is more trouble than it's worth.
We helped overthrow Mossadeq in Iran, because the British wanted us to and he was kinda communist which we didn't like. Mossadeq wasn't a great leader, but then the Shah came to power he wasn't so great either. He had a western slant though, and was willing to do business, so it was okay with the U.S. but then some people weren't happy with that, and Khomeini came to power and installed a theocracy, which is probably one of the worst things which could've happened, or at least something we didn't really want.
Meanwhile, Iraq decides to start a war with Iran. So we offered support to Iraq, even though Saddam Hussein wasn't the greatest leader either.
Then the tide changed again when Iraq invaded Kuwait. So we supported Kuwait instead of Iraq. Though in order to fight this we had to station troops in the Muslim holy-land. This also pissed people off. Among them Osma Bin Laden, who had received our support in the Russian-Afgani conflict.
Later Bin Laden declared war on the U.S. and well ...
The US intervenes in other nations' politics, this costs money, has consequences, and often blows up in our face. But to some ends, the worst part is how it affects other peoples' lives. Mohammed Q. Public is minding his own business trying to get by, but the U.S. keeps interfering with his Gov't 'cause they can't decide what they who or what they want in power.
He has to deal with all the regime change and manipulation. Things maybe better in some instance when we're involved and I've stated how it can be worse. It's not our business though or I don't see how it is. Yet, our tax dollars are being used to support Washington's whims about what would be better for them 'um I mean us at the given moment. I generally don't see this as being a positive, productive, or useful endeavor.
