I've got an idea...

I know what I'll do.

I'll take a famous fast food icon ... some symbol everyone knows, something simple and tacky.

I'll slightly alter it's shape and color. Then make bunch of them and put them up together...

Then I'll call it art and everyone will say I'm brilliant.

I'm lovin' it.

eh, i dont quite see the mcdonalds in it, but i'm not much of a fan of this kind of 'art'. Granted, everyone at the high school is sooo excited about it so i have to pretend i agree! I am planning on seeing it, just because its a train ride away. maybe its better in person?

I would see it if were around... I'm not saying it's complete crap, a bit intriguing. But just the way the speak of it, makes me hate it more ... as if they're brilliant visionaries or something. Granted it's weird and wacky (which is good), but it's just a bunch of orange arches?

I don't know about the McDonald's business. I thought I was being clever. I'm sometimes wrong about that though. But McDonald's has put up big pairs of Yellow arches all over the world, and they don't call themselves artists {shrugs}.

I was curious what you thought. If were to say they were geniuses and I was stupid for criticizing them, I would give a bit more thought (perhaps you as well), but since you haven't it means it's not some super art thing a simple plebeian would not understand, the emperor might be naked?

Thanks for commenting.

i'm still not sure! coffeewhore February 16 2005, 00:13:25 UTC
see, i'm not sure. I've never really been from the school of art where ALL ART IS SUPER and the more it makes no sense the deeper it must be! Some people subscribe to this school of art and there is nothing wrong with that. The definition of art is different to each individual. To me, art needs to make some sort of sense. Or there has to be some inside joke somewhere that i am able to get. Art that deliberately tries to make me feel stupid for not understanding it bugs me and often isn't really 'art' at all (IMO). Just someone who is good at tricking the masses, you know?

I am certainly curious about the Gates. I'm wondering if maybe it looks unimpressive, but IS impressive if you walk through it?

OR maybe its just a bunch of saffron fabric waving in the breeze. I'll get back to you on that one!

Isn't the point of art to be aesthetically pleasing, in some sense? The gates are okay to that end, but not super. They are square, industrial looking, and close to traffic cone orange. Though the color does seem to contrast with New York's browns and grays in a pleasing fashion. The fabric is neat though it reminds me of those hangings in asian gardens (but those are prettier). A few would have been nice .. but some of the pictures I have seen make it look a bit much, like there's one every five feet. I get vertigo looking at it, which is pleasing in a sense and obnoxious in another.

I feel as if the whole this thing has a bit of a snooty overtone to it.

Though, I'm still curious to hear your assessment of it.

Thanks for your reply.
