Angel 5.16 "Shells"

Mar 03, 2004 22:45

I think someone told the people at Angel "Game on!". You seen I knew the writers at Angel could write, but they haven't really been doing what they're capable of lately, until last week. Hopefully this will not be an isolated incident since there might only be a few episodes of Angel left.

First of all I've complained all season that we've had no 'previouslies', they're finally back or at least they were tonight. I love the 'previouslies'.

I was certain they would let the Gunn thing drag on 'til the end of the season. I was actually thinking "this will probably drag out 'til the end of the season.", then Wesley appears and stabs Gunn. ah 'being surprised', I remember this.

Gunn was fired, I assume he was ... were we ever told directly he was? That goes back to AtS 3.03 sort of, not that you need such an instance to set a precedent or anything. This makes what happens to Gunn terribly interesting, I think.

I think Giles would help stop an evil-demon-thing. I don't see why he wouldn't. Don't mess up Buffy ex post facto!

I also thought Angel's speech was getting to be to didactic and stupid, evidentially Wesley did too, interrupting him by shooting the evil lab assistant. Supposedly killing someone is supposed to be a big to do in Whedon-land, or it used to be? I don't think Wesley has killed anyone, up to now.

He's dark and ruthless again? That's usually good.

Spike of course conveniently wants to stay. I'll allow the bad plot reasoning if they can make up for it with good writing.

So now Demon-Fred is part of the cast? They gave her part of the musical montage. This could be very interesting depending upon how they do it. I assume since they gave Fred the flash-back/send-off, that she won't be back, or at least not for a while.

I wonder if they remember Lorne? He hasn't had anything happen to him since he became a cast member.

It's funny how they're dealing with Harmony, who isn't a cast member. They're making her seem like she's good. She's a garden variety Vampire, I thought that equaled bad in Whedon-land?

Overall a good episode, maybe not as good as last week's, but in a way better because we're arc-ing again. Which hopefully means we can stop this one-off muppet, mexican-wrestler, ninja-bot, -type stuff.

Next time: 5.17 "Underneath" April 14th (according to Buffyworld).
Written By: Sarah Fain & Elizabeth Craft
Directed By: Skip Schoolnik

When I think of Elizabeth Craft & Sarah Fain I usually think of good little departures, thought they also do fairly good arcing episodes.

AtS 4.05 "Supersymmetry" This one was a little so/so, but I liked it.

AtS 4.11 "Soulless" Angel loses his soul and points out how everyone sucks ... good stuff.

AtS 4.14 "Release" Middle of the Faith Triology she beats up the shower, Wes completes his journey away from BtVS S3 bumbler by knifing a girl for information and and trains Faith in the Dark-side of the force ... good stuff.

AtS 4.16 "Players" I liked this one 'cause it's the last chance Gunn gets to be cool. He steps out with electro-Gwen. Very good. It was a nice little entity to itself among other episodes which were a bit too arc oriented.

AtS 4.18 "Shiny Happy People" I didn't like the other episodes around it, I though the Jasmine arc kinda dragged in places, but this was a good one though.

AtS 5.03 "Unleashed" Of the sucky S5 episodes at the begining of the season i.e. 'Angel McBeal' I liked this one better than most.

AtS 5.09 "Harm's Way" as I put it, "It wasn't the best episode ever, but it had to happen." I think I also said something to the effect of "It was fairly decent for what it was."

Of all the episodes Skip Schoolnik has directed there isn't one I hate.

AtS 3.08 Quickening: Darla begins to give birth, I remember this being pretty good.

AtS 4.04 "Slouching Toward Bethlehem" Cordelia shows up without a memory. I really liked this one.

AtS 4.08 "Habeas Corpses" The Beast destroys W&H. I remember this being a big to do.

AtS 5.08 "Destiny" Spike becomes solid, Lindsey appears. This one was quite good.
