Earthquake

I have received a couple of very lovely messages from people who heard about the earthquake the center of Italy suffered last night and were worried about me. I wanted to let everyone know I'm okay, we felt it very strongly here in Rome too but there were no damages or casualties. Just the fear of being woken up at 3.30 a.m. by your bed shaking and the whole building creaking, and the subsequent sleepless night. It was, I believe, the strongest earthquake I felt in my whole life... mostly because its center was in a little town not very far from Rome.

Many little towns were mostly distroyed by the quake. The town of Amatrice, for example, famous not only because of its historic relevance but also because it's the place where one of the most famous Italian dishes was born, is half gone now. Watching the news is incredibly painful. The death toll is at 30 for now but there's no telling how high it could actually go since there's still a lot of people missing.

Aftershocks have not stopped, the last one we felt here in Rome too happened just before 2.00 p.m., and I'm hoping and praying they won't make things worse for the people who are now working on recovering bodies and, hopefully, finding survivors under the rubble.

It's a sad day here in Italy.

personal post, rl, bad days
