It has been some time ever since I found a new fandom/character to squee about. The last time I could remember was Date Masamune from Sengoku Basara. The combination of crazy awesome, memetic Engrish and maddening attractiveness just deserves it. XD
This time around I'm fangirling over the shounen manga Sengoku Strays. The protagonist, Kasane Kusanagi, is a modern-day student with a passion for kendo. When she accidentally comes into contact with an antique sword, she was sent back to to the Sengoku era, right at the start of Oda Nobunaga's rise to power. Long story short, she becomes part of Oda's group, fighting for his side until the time she is finally able to come back home.
So far there are seven released volumes. Raws are available up to the sixth, while scans can be found in your favorite site of choice. 8D
So yeah, another Sengoku era. In most works though, Oda's depicted as a power-hungry conqueror and always on the evil side. This time around, he's viewed in more positive light. Kasane acts as audience surrogate during the history-heavy parts (the expositions) but for those unfamiliar with Japanese history, the talks can be a little overwhelming. The art's excellent - it has a shoujo slant despite being action-packed - and, guess what, Kasane's not bloody useless! In fact, she could kick some serious ass. The cast's as diverse as you can get with the usual 'types' in tow (the 'childish brute', the 'nice smart guy', the 'tsundere', etc) and most of them have their moments of badassery. Gentle bishounen Gorouza wielding a gigantic blade, child-like and boisterous lancer Inuchiyo, tsundere dual-wielder (guns or tonfas, take your pic) Kuranosuke, magnetic leader Nobunaga, badass lady Nouhime, a trio of ninja ladies...this manga has the whole package. Of course, I have a tendency to have a favorite character, and strangely enough my fixation was pinned on the 'tsundere' character. Not my usual choice, I assure you, but Kuranosuke is oddly endearing. :D
Recommended if you like your manga fare to have action and educational. 8D
