Levi was wary of nice things. They sometimes crumbled and rotted and fell away with water and hurt and fire. But sometimes they were shiny and new and there was nothing to be afraid of. Only a possibility that something unmistakable was about to happen. Either a fire, consuming and relentless and all-encompassing,
.
The building was impressive, and that was enough to put him on edge. He knew the taste of fresh linen and fresh wine and fresh clothes on his back. Of all the luxuries of a pureblood household, with all the squander of desertion, with all the sweetness of a sunkissed land, with all the sympathy of a lost family. And so things that were shiny and new reminded him of home, and he was frightened that his ill-fortune was going to be the first to rub off on them. He was going to burn this oak and lacquer place to the ground. One day. He hoped it wouldn't be too soon.
For now he was laden with his own possessions: sparkly and springy and coiled, shrunk and spilling out of his pockets. They jingled and chimed as he walked and when he stopped in front of the grand door, it was only with a chest the size of his own body that (for as long as his family had owned it) had always refused to be shrunk. It had the added benefit of reasonably carrying about three bedrooms worth of furniture.
The only problem was getting it up without destroying the walls. Or alerting the muggles. He was happy to come across as a cheerful young man from France, and banging on their walls wasn't going to put him in their favour. Perhaps they had lifting-people? They'd been kind enough to provide a key quite early on. But now he was surely at a loss. Long gone were his sun-soaked fields and grapes and dust and trees. It was already raining. Beginning of summer and it was already raining. What was it about the kingdom that had so offended the sun that is refused to shine it's rays on the city? There were many who suffered, and Levi was likely to be the next victim.
