I hear you bother. The last two years at D*C, I have had one roommate (obviously different one) still me for their share of the room. These were not just mere aquaintences, but real friends.
Yeah, I totally understand you. I would often rather go without than to owe money to a friend and would rather not lend anything out money or otherwise. I've been called selfish, but I was stiffed faaar too often in the past to try it again. You have to do what you have to do.
So let them know in writing this is unexceptable, tell them if they don't agree to pay immediately or make a payment plan in writing immediately, you will be forced to publish their names as bad debtors on LJ and whatever other avenues are available to you. Legally that is all ok to do, so long as you give notice in writing!
Besides, it's never a bad idea to let your other friends know who's lousy about re-paying their friends. Just might save them a penny or two some day.
I try to avoid this frustration. As you know I am very cautious of who I lend money too. I have a someone who that still owes me, probably not as much as you.
I agree with some of what grrlpay said. I would write them a letter stating that you had loan money or sold whatever with dates and stuff. Include a payment plan in this letter. Allow them in writing to revise the payments to something you both agree upon. Both of you need to sign the final plan and each get a copy with actual signatures (not photo copies), and you should have a legal document. I would do this first before messing up their credit, which I am sure is already in the hole. just a suggestion
