When I was in Japan, Asashouryuu was a Mongolian sumo wrestler who was rising quickly through the ranks and attracting lots of criticism because of his 'non-Japanese' ways. He's kind of hot-headed, and he's proud of his own country. Traditionally, when a foreigner reaches the rank of Yokozuna, or Grand Champion, he renounces his native citizenship and takes Japanese citizenship. When Asashouryuu refused to do this it was quite a scandal. I like Asashouryuu because he's a foreigner who appreciates and even excels inside Japanese tradition but refuses to compromise himself in order to do it, and because he combines the best of both cultures in his wrestling style, drawing moves from sumo and from traditional Mongolian wrestling. I also like him because he's a badass! LOL
