I'm back from the 2008 AMG Performance Tour! I went with Dustin and Scott to Euro Motorcars in Bethesda on Saturday, where we mingled with millionaires and drove cars worth well over $150,000.
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG was a big hit:
The SL63 roadster that I drove was jet black and stunning. Also stunning was the cute blond woman from AMG who was riding shotgun. She wasn't just a pretty face, either; she knew her stuff. Driving that incredibly powerful convertible around Bethesda with that beautiful woman next to me...I can't describe it. I just felt so ALIVE.
The CL63 AMG coupe, however, was my favorite car by far; it was also the most expensive. It glided along effortlessly when I needed it to, and charged forward with a throaty roar with just a tap of the accelerator. The idiot in the SL63 in front of me was ambling along at well under the speed limit, so I shot around him in my elegant coupe and left him breathing my rarefied dust. My favorite feature of the CL had to have been the massaging seats, which were almost as powerful as the car itself.
Next, I took Scott and Dustin for a ride in the smallest Mercedes-AMG model, the C63 AMG. Now, I've driven a Mercedes C300 before, but the C63 is an entirely different car. It's truly a wolf in sheep's clothing, and it's the only C-Class model I've ever had any kind of fun driving. I gunned it as I passed a Lexus SC430, and the AMG woman and I exchanged a few snobbish comments about the "inferior" Lexus as we sped off.
In short, I had an amazing time. The CL-Class has always been my favorite Mercedes-Benz, but until this weekend, I'd never driven one. I can only compare it to meeting one's all-time favorite celebrity in real life...and it was everything I ever dreamed it would be.
