Margot and I have decided we love riding the T and spending an evening at Diesel Cafe (not the clothing store!) because it provides such great people watching.
The best was last night when we were coming home from Davis Square on the T and there was this red-faced drunken old man with white hair who was pouring a 40 into a coffee cup. We could smell the alcohol from across the train, and then he began to spout off American history...generals, combat tips, dates, battles. But the best is when he began to sing old war songs very loudly, and then pretended to fire a machine gun.
It was sad and amusing all at the same time. Amusing because he was smiling and really enjoying himself and sad because it was a severe case of shell shock that seemed to have taken its toll over the past 30 years. That's what war does to its "heroes." It's so sad. I chant for World Peace every day.
