Chapter One:
...Transferee...
A young man stopped in front of the soaring gates of the Matsurai University-Japan’s most prestigious school which received the highest number of awards because of its high education status. Only people with brains and of course, money, can ever be accepted in the luxurious university.
The man admired the western style architecture of the buildings as he went in. Though his eyes went wide with its beauty, he had prevented his mouth from opening due to awe. He cannot help but move his eyes all around his new school campus.
He wasn’t exactly excited in going to his new school. He had even persisted in disagreeing with his mother about being suddenly transferred without any reason at all-in which his mother won over the final decision.
One main reason about his resistance was that they weren’t rich and so he won’t, obviously, be able to cope up with the high standards and elegance of the new people he will definitely meet.
But there was one thing that his mother kept on boasting. As a diligent student, his mother was proud of him being actually smart. It doesn’t show on his appearance because of his quiet facade and really meek attitude. But his grades were always above the average. When it comes to his unique looks, in his previous school, he was known to have a pretty face. A face too soft for a guy. His eyes were small but they give a mysterious effect on people who catch a glimpse on them. He has thin, pouty, red lips that seemed too delicate to be touched. His pointed nose kind of emphasized his chubby cheeks. He has a lean but perfectly toned body and his slightly tanned skin added some sexy vibe around him. With this, no one would ever think that he was from an average family. He carried his pride with dignity; although as you look at him, he seemed to be the solitary and shy type.
He continued walking until he was about to reach his building. In the university, each level has a private building so the break times are the only chances that the senior students meet their juniors.
When he arrived at his room, he was surprised to see no one. No other students already hanging around the seats, no people he could talk to. He checked his watch and realized that he arrived too early. He was already used to his former school’s rules and ways, and so he had almost forgotten the University’s schedule he had memorized yesterday. Unlike from his former school, the time for the first subject is at nine o’clock; one hour late than what he was used to. And he had arrived at seven quarter.
He put down his bag on the table and seat he picked. He paused for awhile, thinking if he should just wait inside the classroom for more than one hour or if he should go out to travel a little.
He chose the second one.
He left his bag on the table and went out of the room to explore the building. His new classroom was located at the third floor. The last two floors were meant for the student council and the faculty. Since it was still early after going down to the lower floors of the building, he decided to check the last two upper floors. As soon as he got to the top floor-the place meant for the student council-his eyes immediately took notice of the slightly opened door that seemed to be the entrance for the roof top. He was curious to see what was out that door. He peeked through it before slowly and silently pushing it open. The wind blew his bangs away from his eyes. He breathed in the relaxing fresh air and accepted its cool embrace all around his body. He felt like his nervousness was gone in an instant. His anxiety was blown with the strong gust and it made him feel calmer. He really loved places such as these.
He moved further and found out that the roof top was protected with fence-like railings. He sighed. He sat down on the spot near the door and slowly lied down on his side. The wind continued to waft all over his body. He let his mind float and wander while his eyes were closed. He lost track of time as he fell asleep.
...
“Hey. Hey!”
The young man felt himself being shaken. He heard a gentle voice that kept on calling him. He didn’t want to open his eyes, but suddenly his breathing was cut as something warm covered his lips. With his eyebrows beginning to crease, he slowly opened his eyes only to see someone’s face so close to his; almost pressing. His mind wasn’t able to process what was happening immediately, but after a few seconds when the other person didn’t pull away and his lungs began feeling strange, he pushed the man and sat up.
“Wha-what’re you doing?” He asked in slight panic, instinctively covering his lips.
The other man’s expression didn’t show any surprise. Instead, he smiled.
“You’re a sleep bug, aren’t you?” The man reached his hand towards him. “I’m Sho. Sakurai Sho.”
He looked at the pale hand waiting for him, then to the man who was giving him a friendly smile. He answered intuitively.
“I’m Ohno Sa-“ He hesitated. “Satoshi...” He trailed off before reaching out his hand.
Sho squeezed Ohno’s hand.
“Your hands are so soft.” Sho stared at Ohno’s hands as he held them. “Oh right. We’re late for class.”
Ohno shot up his head. He checked his watch and stood up in rush.
“Crap!” He was going to dash back to the door but stopped to give a look at Sho. “Thanks for waking me up, Sakurai-sa-“ He stopped when Sho raised a finger.
“I want you to call me Sho, Satoshi.” Sho smiled.
Ohno nodded and returned the smile. He immediately ran back inside when he heard the signal bell.
xXOOOXx
It was already lunch time. The classes Ohno had weren’t much progressive for all the teachers decided not to take the first day seriously. They said that first days are only meant for knowing the students and giving them a little background about the subject. On the other hand, the students weren’t particularly listening. They were actually deliberately ignoring their sensei. That was the reason Ohno didn’t have the chance to talk to even one of his new classmates. He was like...isolated from them.
Ohno searched for a table. Almost all the tables were full and whenever he was going to find a vacant one, a group of students would occupy it before he could reach the seat. He was deciding whether to eat outside instead, when he noticed a table occupied by one person only. He tried asking.
“Anou...is it alright if I join you?” Ohno asked slowly.
The girl looked up. She stared at him before producing a smile.
“Sure.” She said.
“Ah. Thank you.” Ohno sat down.
“My name’s Sakurako. You?” She said.
“I’m...Ohno Satoshi.” Ohno answered.
“Yokatta...” Sakurako mumbled.
“Eh?”
“I’m glad I got to know a classmate.”
Ohno gave her a bewildered look.
“We’re classmates, you know.” Sakurako chuckled. “I immediately noticed you. Weren’t you even looking around your own classroom? You’re a transferee here, aren’t you?”
“How did...” Ohno’s brows slightly creased.
“Well...the way how silent you are. It immediately gives me the idea that you’re new to this kind of environment.”
“Uhh---Ahh....sou.”
After a moment of silence, Sakurako thought of all the topics they can use for a conversation. And eventually, they had so much to talk about.
For the first week, Ohno didn’t expect to have a friend he can always be with in the huge campus. He was surprised that he and Sakurako were getting closer and closer. It had only been a week but he felt like they’ve known each other for a long time. He was thankful to her for giving him confidence and ease.
...
“Ah! Oishi!” Sakurako exclaimed after swallowing the mochi Ohno gave her. “You made this? This is really good! I can’t even make something like this. You’re an amazing guy.”
“Eh...not really. That’s just a simple dish my mom taught me.” Ohno scratched the back of his neck as he spoke.
“No. This is really-tasty.” Sakurako said between munches. “Teach me how to do this, alright?”
“Su-sure.” Ohno chuckled. He cannot help but feel nice being praised so honestly like this.
“Hang out at my hou-“ Sakurako stopped. Her eyes suddenly focused straight. Her big grin slightly dropped.
When Ohno noticed the pause on Sakurako’s part, he tilted up his head to look at her. Sakurako was smiling at him.
“I’ll buy frappes for us.” She said as she stood up in a hurry.
“No. I’ll do tha-“ Ohno said as he also began to stand up.
“No!” Sakurako raised her voice. “I mean...it’s just there near the counter. It won’t even take more than two minutes.” She smiled and ran towards the counter.
Ohno wasn’t paying attention when squeals started invading the dining hall’s every corner. Running footsteps from students echoed on the floor. The atmosphere became different as soon as four scrupulous presences entered the hall.
The four men were already walking at the path near their table when Ohno saw Sakurako excitedly running back towards their seats. The time he realized that Sakurako was going to hit someone; it was too late when Sakurako saw his caution. The frappes she bought for the two of them fell on the floor. Only one glass goblet rolled over the marble ground.
The person Sakurako bumped was silent, but he was emitting a foul mood. With his back facing Ohno, he removed his expensive long coat and uncaringly threw it in the face of Sakurako. Sakurako grunted in pain.
Ohno stood up on this.
The man was holding the emptied goblet. His whole hand up to the part of his wrist was covered with whipped cream and some of the frappe. Without any warning, he dropped the glass with force. The loud sound made Sakurako’s body flinch in fear and surprise. The goblet broke; its pieces scattered on the floor. The man leaned forward to glare at her.
“What are you going to do with my coat?” He said in a low voice.
It took several minutes for her to pull out a response.
“I---I’m...I’m so-sorry...” Sakurako stuttered. Her voice trembled.
The man banged his palm on the table. It rattled.
“What? I can’t hear you.” The man growled.
“She said she’s sorry.” Ohno said in a clear voice.
The man looked at him. His eyes observing the unfamiliar profile.
“Is he your boyfriend?” He chuckled. “What a frail-looking guy.”
Ohno was going to approach Sakurako, but the man blocked him. He was slightly taken aback by the other man’s height for he was totally towered.
Ohno breathed in before speaking.
“You’re threatening a girl, scaring her just for making your coat dirty a little. How embarrassing...” Ohno made the best mocking face he could pull off. He was managing to cover his nervousness with ease.
The other man’s eyes widened and he was just about to give a punch to Ohno but then his friend’s hand held him.
“Oi Jun! Don’t make a scene so early.” His friend whispered to him.
The situation slowly calmed down after being forced to stop by his friends.
“Let me give you a caution. No matter how you try to be strong, you won’t last in this university.” Jun said before leaving with his friends.
Ohno immediately approached Sakurako and asked her if she’s alright. She nodded but kept her face away from his concerned look.
They were going to leave the dining hall when Ohno saw Sho looking at him with a smile. Sho winked at him and then turned to follow the other three who went to the hall’s second floor.
As soon as they reached the usual place they always go to, under the big shade of a Sakura tree, Sakurako began chuckling silently. She sounded like she was sobbing. Ohno turned to her and was worried about her behaviour.
“Is something wrong?” Ohno asked. They were both leaning their backs on the trunk of the tree.
“It’s nothing. It’s just that-“ Sakurako faced Ohno with a scared expression. “-that man really scares me. His glare told me as if he wanted to kill me!”
Ohno went closer to her and put his palm over her hand. He was trying to comfort her.
“That won’t happen. I’ll be in his way.” He smiled to reassure Sakurako.
Sakurako returned the smile and gave Ohno’s hand a light squeeze.
...
It was the third week since the opening of classes started. With Sakurako’s help and generosity, Ohno had grasped the university’s rules and was not feeling lonely as how he had expected his senior year would be. She was so friendly, so concerned about him that he didn’t feel like a transferee and a person with a different profile. Sakurako gave him the feeling of simplicity and humbleness. She wasn’t like their other classmates who were always boasting about their riches and properties, or even status.
Ohno walked through the hallway towards the locker. He was feeling at ease. He didn’t notice the students’ glances at him; their malicious stares.
When he unlocked his locker, he pulled out the rubber shoes he will need for the Soccer team tryout that will be held later after lunch time. Thinking of practicing on his free time, he barely noticed the red card that was hanging on the divider of his locker.
He stared at it curiously.
“A red card?” He mumbled. “F4...” He read.
Then as he pulled it off from the metal divider, he heard many footsteps behind him. He turned around and saw the students, who were just passing by, queue up around him. They had same expressions on their faces. They were all smiling so unkindly to him.
Ohno’s brows creased.
“What?” He said.
“You’re only new here and you already pissed him off.” One student said.
The other students who were around him started cornering him.
“What do you me-“ Ohno wasn’t able to finish his words when the students began their assault.
