Finally finished downloading and watching episode one of Natsume Yuujinchou. Basically: I LOVE IT! It hits the EXACT spots that the manga did for me~ <3 There's just that right amount of humor, sadness that pulls a little at you and then that sort of warmth to the heart. <--- why does it sound so abstract??? XD I think the series is aptly named because I've always thought of it as a summer-like series.
Hmm, I wish the animation had been a little smoother and prettier, but in comparison to the weirdness that was Antique Bakery, I'm glad it just looks fine!
First of all, I love Natsume a lot. T_T He deserves lots of hugs; dealing with spirits/demons that are always after him (who can never seem to tell that he's a guy XDDD), people saying he's strange and being bounced around with no real family. And yet, despite all that, he still sees good. XDD;; Of course, this doesn't mean he doesn't get apathetic about things/people so he's very human. Favorite parts with Natsume was when he basically punches Nyanko-sensei in the face and says he wants to return the names that are in the Yuujinchou. <3 He's not just gonna sit down and give in~
His voice is also done by Hiroshi Kamiya, so my first thought was: WHOA IT'S TIERIA FROM GUNDAM 00. OH NO WAIT--it sounds...it sounds like TAKEMOTO~ <3 I think it was a good choice for Natsume and especially considering the atmosphere of the series, it matches rather well I think.
Secondly, Nyanko-sensei is awesome in his round cat glory XDD The scene with him getting stuck in the closet and getting watermelon seeds on his face, etc. He's so ADORABLE! <3 But then of course, there's also his "elegant" true demon form and he smacks down that other demon = AWESOME~ The scene where he agrees to go along with Natsume's plan to return the names totally tugged at my heart. I felt like you could really get a sense of the reluctant interest/affection Nyanko-sensei as a demon has for someone human like Natsume. XDD The scene at the end where they go to have sweet buns together makes me ridiculously happy.
There's not really an overarching plot for Natsume Yuujinchou, so I guess it could get boring for people who don't like this sort of episodic life sort of thing, but I tend to like this format a lot. The little stories/scenes that you have to put together--like seeing little pieces of life? I'm also kind of weak towards dorky relationship between giant spirit/animal/dragon and human. XDD The way Natsume interacts with Nyanko-sensei is always full of awesome (at least in the manga).
In other words, I think I'll keep following the anime, assuming they don't go off into creating their own random stories or try to put together a huge plot for this (thankfully, it doesn't seem likely). The animation isn't horrible so that I can't stand it and I like the voices so far. XD It's definitely, I think, a series fit for summer. Hahah, I totally want to reread the manga now (too bad I'm leaving in like FOUR HOURS).
