Great stuff at this year's Cloth of Gold. Six entrants, lots of yummy wool, no waiting.
Props to the Ramshaven Finnish team for the awesome job, winning First in Novice. Shiomi is a stitching maniac. Love the spiral brass wire beads the team made. I have seen photos of the extant beads and fabric scraps but never considered actually making them. Totally geeking out over that entry. HRM pointed out the difficult cut of the white undertunic.
Eoforwic did a splendid job again, winning First in Advanced with the Mary of Hapsburg gown recreation. Lovely green silk, well cut skirt. I loved the rose linen bloomers, very sweet. The hat was the icing on the cake.
Other highlights: a pretty Byzantine necklace with pendant pearls, oatmeal linen from the Darc side of the Loom team, the silk Liadin Chu used for her cap, and wee Liam's suit of clothes for his birthday. I remember making Matthew's baby tunic the same way years ago with the gores and rolled up sleeves.
Cloth of Gold is always a pleasure to judge. I autocrated the first Cloth of Gold in 2006 (before that it was Golden Seamstress) and have helped judge the two CoGs since then. Maybe next time I will be in the right Life phase to enter a team.
Did my first foray as deputy on-site signet. Didn't screw up. Thank you Lyda for the grins and confidence! Nicolaa contributed a couple of Lindisfarne-inspired beauties with knotwork cats with large staring eyes. I had a simple scroll with silver gouache wolves gripping a Maiden's Heart and matching jewelled rondels.
Here's a picture of the scroll:
Colder day than expected - almost constant icy flurries that veritably rattled through the branches of the woods around the site.
I witnessed the beginning of Keja's vigil and later her laurelling ceremony. Strongly persona-inspired, interesting and pretty but didn't care for the heavy self-abasement language. I take things very seriously. I did like the swinging censer. They lit it earlier behind a curtain and until the scent really developed I was concerned that the wooden structure had sprung a fire. I'm such a dope.
Got some satisfying work done yesterday on my transitional houppelande in red, black and gold brocade edged with blonde fun fur. Got the rest of the main seam sewn this morning. Later I need to cut and sew the hem, then cut out the hanging sleeves, the false inner sleeves and dickey in contrasting black faux dupioni brocade and finish that baby off, hopefully in time for Coronation.
Ludwig put on a stellar lunch as usual. Best $5 lunch I have had in ages. Fresh corn chowder (never had it before, very good), big chunks of garlic bread, choice of vegetable or meat lasagne, make-your-own caesar salad and big cup of apple or orange juice or choice of pop. Mmmm, Coke Zero saved my life.
Once Court let out I made a beeline for the parking lot and called Albrecht. He had pork chops and fried rice just coming out of the pan. Zoomed home. Ahhhh.
