The Vision of Pink
The Pink Power Ranger off of the old television series The Power Rangers represents the strength, athleticism, authority, and power that a woman can have, yet in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, pink represents the fake personality of a person. Pink is a symbol of a person or personality that is not taken very seriously because of the childish way that they act or the childish personality they have. This motif shows Fitzgerald’s belief that people and their personalities are childish and irresponsible. The people have a carefree life and do not care about the things that are happening even though they are adults and have a life that they should be in control of.
The first time that pink is mentioned does not come until later on into the book when Daisy Buchanan who is from an old money southern family and married to Tom Buchanan is spending her time with her old lover Jay Gatsby, the protagonist of this book. She tells him, “I’d like to just get one of those pink clouds and put you in it and push you around”(soft 94). She is back to her younger years when she is around Gatsby making her say more childish and immature things to him. In this particular part of the book, pink is symbolizing the youth “love” of Daisy and Gatsby. It shows that their love is not real and is just a replay of the love they thought they had before Jay went away to war and before Daisy became married to Tom who graduated from Yale and is also from an old money family.
Pink is mentioned later on in the book when Tom and Gatsby are in an argument over who has more of Daisy’s love or any of it at all for that matter. It comes into the picture when Tom is yelling as he says, “An Oxford man!.. Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit!”(soft 122). Tom is blurting out how his personality should not be taken seriously because is thinks he is so high maintenance and off hands to those that are below him in social classes. He is acting like a spoiled child that thinks that he is so much better than the rest of the children because he is so spoiled by his parents. Pink specifically is referring to how unrealistic he is being about having Daisy for himself when he should know that Tom is always going to have her just like he has had her in the past when he was cheating on her with Myrtle. Daisy does not care that he is around with another woman because she will always need him. Pink also symbolizes the fairytale-like life that Gatsby is trying to achieve. He wants Daisy, money, and anything else in the world that he can get his hands on.
