Racism: Deniers and Diminishers

Jun 18, 2008 11:30

This is an excellent article from the Washington Post by a writer named Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie entitled "The Color of an Awkward Conversation." It's about how race works in America, how, when witnessing an incident that a black person might experience as racist, most white onlookers will immediately either deny it was racist, because they believe racism doesn't exist anymore or seek to diminish it as an individual case of "ignorance."

Note to self: possibly use for first week of Multi-ethnic literature class as a way to get race on the table.
