Fandom themed Cocktails for Fangirls

Feb 09, 2008 20:07

In honour of Day 8 of 14valentines. Today's subject is domestic violence. There's an essay on the subject here.

I love cocktail parties. My mother thinks it is madness that useful and commonplace things like frying pans live in the garage so that my full selection of cocktail glasses can live in the kitchen. Priorities, Mum.

I also love theme parties. I've done James Bond, and Robin Hood, and Alexander. My biggest and most ambitious would have to be the five course Master and Commander dinner. I still have some surviving pieces of ship's biscuit five years later. No weevils yet. When I've paid off more of my mortgage I'm going to do the eleven course menu from the first class restaurant on the Titanic.

In this spirit, I've assembled a selection of cocktails that make me think of favourite characters from fandom. You don't need a party. Just pour yourself one, relax, and kick back with an ep or two.

When I say a "part", it doesn't matter how big or small it is. Use a cocktail measure if you have one, or any other receptacle you have in the kitchen. When I specify measures, use the markings inside your cocktail measure, or on any other measuring cup.

James Bond

The James Bond Martini, aka the Vesper.
I've seen cocktail geeks complain that serving a martini "shaken, not stirred" bruises the vodka. Just shows they've never read Casino Royale, where Bond gives very clear instructions, and Ian Fleming comments that bruising is entirely the point.

Three parts Gordon's dry London gin
One part vodka
Half a part Kina Lillet

Pour into a shaker over ice. Shake very well, strain, then add a large thin slice of lemon peel.

The Goldfinger
Gotta invite those nemeses.

1½ ounces cinzano
¾ ounce vodka
2 tsp orange juice
1 dash orange bitters

Pour into a shaker over ice. Shake well, strain, and serve.

Supernatural

The Bosom Caresser
Is it wrong that this made me think of Dean? It's technically a nog, though not the type the boys were drinking at Christmas.

1 ounce raspberry juice
1 egg
Cold milk

Shake the juice and egg together in a shaker. Pour into a glass, top up with milk, and stir.

The Zombie

1¾ ounces pineapple juice
¾ ounce light rum
¾ ounce dark rum
¾ ounce lemon or lime juice
2 tsp apricot brandy
¾ ounce 150 proof rum

Pour everything except the 150 proof into a shaker and shake well over ice. Strain into a highball glass full of crushed ice. Pour 150 proof over. Garnish with orange peel, a maraschino cherry, and a sprig of mint.

The Red Devil

¾ ounce triple sec
¾ ounce campari
¾ ounce orange juice

Pour into a shaker over ice. Shake well, strain, and serve.

Alexander

The Brandy Alexander
Clearly this has nothing to do with Alexander the Great, but it is my favourite of favourite cocktails nonetheless, and never fails to take me back to the time I was stranded in a tiny Greek village and drank about ten of them before passing out in the sun, and being put to bed by the kindness of strangers.

One part brandy
One part brown creme de cacao
One part fresh cream

Pour into a shaker over ice. Shake well, strain, then top with grated nutmeg.

Alexander's Sister
God knows why it's called that, but I can imagine Kleopatra green with envy?

One part gin
One part crème de menthe
One part fresh cream

Pour into a shaker over ice. Shake well, strain, and serve.

Stargate: Atlantis

The Aviation
Due to the presence of lemon juice, this one's clearly just for John, and preferably on a night Rodney's working.

2 dashes maraschino

Pour into a shaker over ice. Shake well, strain, and serve.
