Sexy James Bond exhibition explores the agent's Kills and Kisses in Brockley

By Nikki Jarvis

Bond lovers can decide for themselves if 007 became more dangerous, romantic or sexy over time at an exhibition which is truly From Russia with Love.

Kills and Kisses, an exciting collection by Moscow-born artist Arina Orlova, explores how the beloved British agent changed during his 50-year existence - even allowing you to step into his debonair shoes.

The show, at cueB Gallery in Brockley, features the six incarnations of Bond in full size along with six of his gorgeous girls from each decade.

Black numbers next to each actor represent the number of times he killed and red figures show the amount of kisses he stole during his reign as James.

Arina, who lives in east London, told Vibe all about her stunning creations and Bond-watching marathons.

She said: “I was asked to work on a project about trickster characters and I started thinking about Bond and how he always find a way out and remains on top.

“I got more into watching Bond films from a research point of view and I was amazed at how the females changed.

“They are really disposable in the beginning - I counted the kisses and in some films Roger Moore would kiss four different girls.

“They would just walk into the room and say ‘anything I can do for you, anything at all?’ “You think ‘why is she doing that, is he really that amazing?’ “We get less of that in later films - the girls become more equal and stop being so disposable.”

Arina’s “icons” are created on wood with acrylic paint and her own unusual technique of image transferral.

She added: “People really don’t know how they are made, I like that.

“It took me a long time - it was a few months of very intense work to make those pieces.

“I think it’s amazing how much everyone loves Bond and how many men would like to be him.

“He triggers something in people.

“He has everything every big boy wants to have - cars, gadgets, beautiful girls, what else is there?”

The striking gold backdrops immediately incite a sense of glamour, danger, lust and elegance - crucial themes which are integral to the Bond franchise.

Arina, 30, skilfully combines elements of traditional mythology and iconography with contemporary popular culture.

Usually drawing with ink and chopsticks, this is the first project in which she has moved away from drawing.

“The characters are faceless because when you have six Bonds in a row you would just look at their faces.” She said.

“I wanted people to look at their poses, body language and the project to be about the character rather than the actor who played them.

“I think people will have a lot of fun at the exhibition.

“There is a blank board they can step in front of to strike a pose as Bond.

“And girls can pose as the new 2012 Bond girl - you don’t normally have the chance to step into the picture like this.”

Arina’s favourite Bonds are Sean Connery and Daniel Craig for his masculinity.

Roger Moore, however, was a little too much of a “womaniser” for her liking.
