I'm not Christian, or a mom, but I really like what's been happening over at
Momastery recently: a series of people writing about their fears. Sacred Scared. There is a Velcrow Ripper film called "Scared Sacred" which came out in 2004 (you can watch it
here) which I assume Glennon knows she is referring to with her Sacred Scared title. Anyway, I really, really love this quote from Glennon:
"The world is changed by scared people who JUST GO AHEAD AND SHOW UP SCARED AND FULLY HUMAN instead of waiting to morph into some sort of superhero before they start living. World changers show up, with their insecurity looming and their knees shaking - long before anybody gives them permission to show up. Don’t wait for permission and don’t wait for perfection. Do what you need to do. Fail wildly and try again. Fail again and try again, again. Keep failing and trying ’till you die. THAT’S THE STUFF. All the magic and connection and excitement and LIFE is in the flailing and failing with other messy, beautiful, brave folks."
That's going to be my new mantra: Just go ahead and show up scared. There are a whole lot of parts of the degree I'm doing that I find terrifying (pretty much anything that involves public speaking or being watched, both of which there are plenty of in this program) and I know that I just have to do it anyway. But there's something about knowing that it's okay to be scared that I find helpful.
