I want to share this article as widely as I can, because I think everyone needs to read it. It's important to reserve your judgement until you've read the whole thing, though - at the beginning I was thinking, what the heck is the point of this convoluted story about stolen rabbits? And, well, the vegans are just going to say that the whole problem ( Read more... )

I don't know anything about how much food 1/6 of a cow would create and maybe I'm a food snob who doesn't have a problem paying a lot of money for food , but $300 and a bit doesn't like that much. How many meals do you get out of that?

I'm not sure about this line: "And, well, the vegans are just going to say that the whole problem could have been avoided by not keeping rabbits in the first place." That's a pretty big generalization. Their bunny operation sounds fine to me.

I'm not vegan, I am pescetarian, but when I was vegan I probably would have said the same.

My mom seemed to think that $300 was on the pricey side even for grass-fed organic beef. I haven't calculated out how many meals it would be (and we've probably eaten almost half of it by now and I haven't been keeping track) but with our usual pattern of eating beef about once a week (at the most) we aren't going to have to buy any more until Spring, at least ( ... )

The beef I bought mostly fit into a bag about the size of a large household garbage bag, if that helps. It was a big paper bag previously used for animal food or alfalfa pellets or whatever. $300 for a feed bag and a bit of beef plus a bag of soup bones on the side.

I was curious too and I'm guessing it came out to $2.60-4/lb (guessing at 450-700 pounds of usable meat once the cow was slaughtered (I wasn't sure of the cow's size or how much of the various innards were kept and divided among the shares). For organic beef (presumably from a free-range cow), that sounds like a great deal!
