...and the sun sinks down to close another beautiful day

So the weather is grand here right now. Got up to 70 today, nice and sunny, just lovely. Since it is Patriots Day here in Massachusetts, my parents had the day off, so Quinn and I went to their house for lunch and ended up staying for dinner, too. I helped out a bit with the yard work (raking, raking, and more raking - they have a lot of yard!) and Quinn got to play outside for the longest stretch yet. He got really dirty, too, so he got to take a bath at Grandma and Grandpa's house before dinner. He also collected a (small) bump on his head, two black fly bites, and several scratches on his face (yes, he did a face-plant into the lawn - my dad was taking him for a ride on a hand truck - perhaps not the most brilliant idea!). Luckily he's really not too worse for wear, though Eric did comment that we're going to be taking him to the doctor scratched up again (tomorrow is his 1 year appointment). I forget what happened last time. I'll try not to feel too much like a bad parent - actually I felt much worse after the changing table incident - today is just what happens when you spend lots of time playing outside and I will have to get used to it! I just need to keep remembering how atrocious my knees look since when I was a kid I don't think I could go a day without needing another band-aid (at least when the weather was nice!). Anyway, as for more events of the day, Quinn went from being quite scared of the tractor (dad took him for a ride and he came back very unhappy - you can tell he was nervous just by the way he looked!) to deciding that it was tolerable (the last ride was with me in the trailor and he was giggling by the end). We haven't had our tractor out yet this season (our raking situation is not so bad - we have quite a bit of yard, too, but (unfortunately or fortunately?) not so many trees), so we'll have to see what he thinks about a tractor in our yard.

It looks like the next couple days are going to be as nice or nicer than today, so I will try to get yard work done at my own house next. Could have done some this morning but unfortunately had to spend some time on the computer getting some church stuff done (music committee, fund raising, etc.). I have trouble spending time on the computer while Quinn is awake because he has discovered the power button and tends to turn it off at inopportune moments!

In other Quinn news, my mom did comment today that she was a little surprised that Quinn hasn't yet started walking very short distances (i.e. one or two steps from coffee table to couch), based on how well he walks while holding onto your finger. I actually feel a little bit better because I had been thinking the same thing but thought I must be crazy because what do I know? I guess he's just being very cautious. If you try to get him to stand on his own he will almost immediately make a grab for something or sink right down to the ground, but if he is at all distracted he can stand just fine. This weekend I was playing with him and put a toy in the bib pocket of his overalls. He was using one hand for the toy and the other hand to hold mine to stay standing, but eventually started using both hands on the toy and was totally fine until he realized! On the one hand I know things will get harder once he starts walking (not that he will be getting into new things since he can pretty much get into them all now, he will just get to them sooooooooo much faster), but on the other hand I'm dying for him to start walking I guess just because that's the next big thing. But I can't make him do it so I guess I shouldn't worry about it. He seems to walk very well (even on all of the uneven ground outside) while holding onto my finger so he's definitely building up his muscles. You should see his thighs now! Of course they aren't as huge as some of the other babies' we've seen but when you think that six months ago he was the skinniest little thing, it's just an amazing transformation. As far as the walking goes, I guess I really only hope that he'll be doing it by the end of next month so his Nana and Papa can see when we visit them in Chicago. Everyone keeps telling me that it will be any day now, but he seems pretty content crawling place to place for now.

house, quinn
