I was originally supposed to work 2:30-11 (close the store), but my supervisor asked me last week if I'd be willing to stay late and help with inventory. I agreed, so my shift was changed to 4:30-12:30. When Jim was explaining the process to me, he mentioned we'd begin at 8pm and would hopefully be out of the store by 12:30...And that it would require 4 people (around 20 hours of labor) to get it done in that time frame.
Here are some things that happened tonight:
-Spent most of the night working with John; we were counting stock in the back (mostly in the freezer), writing the counts on the products' boxes, and printing scanning labels for each box. We did this to prep for inventory, and to make it go a lot quicker. Lots of work that really wasn't useful besides preparing for inventory. Mike and Jim were both doing counts, too.
-At 8, we begin actually scanning product in the freezer to begin taking inventory.
-At 8:20, Jim tells us to stop because Matt let him know that it didn't seem like the inventory was showing up in the system... so we wait while Jim calls HQ or whoever was in charge of it to see what was up and to get set up to take inventory. Jim finds out that clearance for taking inventory starts at 9pm now, instead of 8. We took our lunches while we waited on the clock.
-After 9pm, and still no word on having clearance. We count and label more boxes since we have the time.
-10pm, store is closing, still can't start inventory. We pull outdated eggs from the cooler; over 100 cartons get tossed. :(
-Mike teaches Jim and I how to remove Temporary Price Cut signs, so we do so in the grocery block to kill time.
-11pm, still can't do inventory. Jim says he'll stick around til 11:30, but if no one calls before then, we're outta there and inventory will be rescheduled.
-11:25pm...Jim says we out. ;)
Benefits of not having to do inventory:
-Not having to stay til 12:30am!
-Down time = sharing some laughs = supervisors become more human to me
-Mike and I went over my training logs (only 4 weeks after I began the job!) :)
But it SUCKS that we spent that much time prepping for inventory...I did almost nothing to benefit the operation of the store itself tonight.
Also...pretty sure I've given myself away as a goody-good, since we discussed Stephen Lynch a little bit because Jim lent Mike his CD, and I said I didn't like him because he's offensive and very un-PC. I cannot break free of the stereotype!!!
