Things going downhill for "Asakiyumemishi" the anime

I was looking forward to the anime adaptation of the Japanese manga "Asakiyumemishi" by Yamato Waki, based on the ancient classic "The Tale of Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu.

This was the original promo picture. (Gorgeous!)

I've read the manga and the art is just GORGEOUS. So I was looking forward to this anime, set to begin Jan. 2009. Then I come across this...

"The Mainichi Newspaper reports that director Osamu Dezaki (Aim for the Ace, Ultraviolet: Code 044) has decided upon a new direction for his upcoming Tale of Genji anime television series. The project, first announced last August as an adaptation of Waki Yamato’s manga series Asakiyumemishi ~ The Tale of Genji, will now be titled Genji Monogatari Sennenki (Millennium Old Journal: Tale of Genji). Rather than an adaptation of the shoujo manga version of Murasaki Shikibu’s classic novel, the Genji anime will now be based directly on the original novel. The Genji anime is still scheduled to premier in January as Fuji TV’s 14th “Noitamina” series."

And this is the new promo picture... (O, generic beauty...and what's with the tacky alphabet, yo!?)

I see that they're simply going CHEAP. Some idiot executive probably decided, "Oh hey, the original novel is 1,000 years old, and so it's in 'public domain' (= no copyright), so we won't have to pay anyone for the story. Why should we base it on a mangaka's work and pay her due copyright fee when we can go cheap?" ("New direction" my a$@!)
I'm sorry to say, but the original puts me to sleep! Besides, it was Yamato Waki's artwork and her imagination that really brought the story to life for the audience of this century. I'm not sure who's doing the character design, but... (granted, her style of art may not have transferred all that well to anime style in the first place. I can't stand eyes taking up more than half of a face on every character!) Now I feel I can't expect much from the anime version... *sob*

OK, so the movie "Onmyouji" was sucky, but maybe they can turn that wonderful 13-volum manga series into anime after all.  That would make me happy.  Couldn't we get Satoshi Kon interested in that one, maybe?
