Another day in Appalachia

This morning I awoke with a killer migraine, which I normally no longer have (used to have them something fierce). It was so severe that I thought I was going to throw up (I've never done that before with a migraine) and it hurt just to put my head on the pillow. My aide, Ellen, wasn't in today, which made it hard on Bear as he had extra work to do this morning. AFter he left for school, I laid back down and finally fell asleep. When I awoke, the edge was off of the pain, but the "seed" of the headache was still there. It has eased considerably this afternoon.

I forgot to mention that yesterday the washer broke (a belt), and the dryer has been whining again. Took a lot of work but we have a repairman coming tomorrow -- we've had an extended warranty for ten years (!!) now, and maybe someday will get a new set. We'll see.

Today, I took the dogs outside and it was truly glorious. The maple tree is fully leafed out and it is the most beautiful green. The front steps and yard were sun-dappled, and the air was sweet with the smell of blooming trees and bushes. There was a soft, pleasant breeze and the air was cool at about 67 degrees. I had planned to read my Kindle out there (reading two books at the moment: Home Safe by Elizabeth Berg, and The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, both are wonderful), but the birds caught my attention.

In the hour I was out there, I saw a hairy woodpecker, a red-bellied woodpecker (just beautiful), a gold finch, a cardinal, several blue jays, many sparrows of different kinds, a rufous-sided towee couple, a wren, a white-breasted nuthatch, and a whole host of birds I didn't identify. They all came to the feeder, or underneath it. There were so many different songs and calls, and when the large red-bellied woodpecker arrived on the tree (all of this was just a few feet from me, down the steps from where I was), he let out a long call that was just spectacular!

Although I doubt I got any Vitamin D, as I was always in the shade of the canopy, it certainly lifted and filled my spirit. I could spend the whole day out there!

The girls got their lab results and they are negative for MRSA, thank God. Adriel said she nearly had to return to the ER last night because she was having such awful chest pains. I chastised her severely for not going, as she has high blood pressure that is still untreated, and she could have a stroke or heart attack. She promised to go if there is a next time. She did go to the clinic here, and they will see her next week -- even though they know how high her blood pressure is, that is the earliest they can see her!

This area is so desperately lacking in medical care and physicians. I wish Obama would change that, but probably no one really knows about it. There are some excellent doctors here, and my endocrinologist is one of them. There just aren't enough of them.
