so moby says

"a vegan diet is materially more efficient than an animal product based diet. by that i mean that you can feed lots more people with grain directly than by feeding that grain to a cow and then killing the cow. in a world where people are starving it seems criminal to fatten up cows with grain that could be keeping people alive."

well, yes. but why ( Read more... )

Having survived ten years of vegetarian austerity, I can appreciate Moby's philosophy (and many of my friends' philosophies) of avoiding food with faces. However, there is no denying the fact that every living thing kills its dinner to survive; thus, to live is to kill.
Why is it that we feel it better to kill plants? Science says that they have feelings, too. Forgive me in this indulgence of meat-eater rationalization. This is, perhaps, a twisted perspective. Alas, I am twisted. And looking for a hamburger.

it is true but we do not need to kill to survive. & i have had friends saying, we are top of the food chain, we are most intelligent, hence we deserve to eat the animals. but wait a minute..
if we are so intelligent, could we not see that not only will being vegetarian benefit animals, but ourselves? i.e. the thing moby said about feeding the grain to our fellow starving humans. rather than to the beasts we will eat when they eventually die.

i can't believe i am having this conversation {giggles}. i hate internet debate about vegetarianism & abortion, etc. but oh well. i don't mean it in any clear, defined, angry way. we're just talking.

and oh, i know. the plants having feelings.
thats why i take it too far, to fruitarianism.
fruits being the only food you can eat without killing something.

Oh, I agree. I am not attempting a "debate" by any means. This is all good. I am simply suggesting that every living thing eats something that was once alive. There is that "only eat what falls from the tree" approach but, man, I don't even know what to do with that! If I were to attempt that, well, I think I'd travel the country side at night, placing cows in elm trees. And, you know, that just ain't right.

hahaha.
i think that was just a joke anyway. nobody really only eats what falls from the trees. why? because trees want you to take their fruits & spread their seeds.
what was that joke from? something about mary? no?

hahaha, cows in elm trees.

oh sad, isn't it?
grains = bad,yes in some schools of though.
thats why it all whittles its way down to fruitarianism being the only way..
but even then theres hassles.

i guess these days,
moderation is seriously the key?
but still.. i dont like meat. just a personal choice. and i wish others would cut down. not quit, but cut down. im sort of alright with fish. i'll maybe eat chicken twice a year. i dont think ive had red meat since i was seven or something.

p.s. why do you say grains are bad..?

"i mean it is really only their milks and their eggs"

This is something I never understood. To me, it would seem that stealing the young from an animal whos main goal in life is to reproduce would be crueler than killing the animal it self.

Not that i care either way. I eat whatever i fancy and have no issues with it. Just something that always pops in my head when some of my friends who were vegetarian, but still did the dairy thing, would talk about animal cruelity and stuff.

Sorry for interrupting here, I was reading the friends page of inourbloomers as i so often do.

I'm a vegetarian, not a vegan, so i do the dairy thing.

I say this. Eggs you buy in grocery stores are not fertilized. They do not have babies in them. Female humans walk around every day with eggs inside of them. They do not have babies in them. Well, not all of them.

Cows do not have to be impregnated to produce milk.

None of this is being stolen from babies.

Forcing animals to give away their milk and eggs, is cruel on a level i suppose, cruel things happen every day, but some things are more severe than others....Now the baby issue is clear for you.
