In other news, we're back from a week in Montana and two days in the Black Hills. We saw some awesome stuff. We have pictures of some things, but most of the coolest stuff defied photography for one reason or another. That stuff was:

-A baby black bear climbing a hillside at dusk in Yellowstone, whining for the mom it had apparently lost.
-A hunting Osprey who hovered over Yellowstone river looking for fish, dove down, and came up empty-handed three times. The third time it actually took the plunge into the river and I was sure it had gotten something, but no. Then it shook itself dry like a dog, except in mid-flight. It looked like a lot of work.
-A bull moose charge a pet dog who got too close. This was during out attempt to visit a completely undeveloped natural hot-spring. There was a big moose blocking the path and some other people who had been waiting for it to clear the way when we showed up had some dogs running loose. One of the dogs got a little too close and the moose charged after it. Luckily, the mid-sized dog had a good lead and could easily keep pace with the moose. Sadly the moose stuck to its clearing and it was getting dark, so no hot-spring for us.
-An owl almost hit our windshield. I couldn't identify the species, but it was big.
-An adolescent Elk trying to play-fight with its friends the way a dog does: crouch, leap, bounce, run, stop, crouch, charge, dodge, prance...
-Too many great landscapes to count, often with dramatic lighting provided by the turbulent weather and setting sun.
-The Old Faithful Inn, which is huge and awesome and bizarre and no photographs will ever do it justice. I just wish they'd do what it takes to re-open the crow's nest and rooftop deck. Stupid earthquakes!
-A UFO hovering in the broad daylight over Bozeman, MT. It's apparent size and motion seemed impossible - any combination of actual size, distance, and speed that could bring it about would defy everything I know about the state of the art in powered flight. It also was nearly perfectly round and featureless and white. So it was clearly either aliens, or a small balloon tethered on a long string just beyond the distance where it would be recognizable, its apparent motion caused by our driving at 75mph past it. YOU BE THE JUDGE!

Another highlight of the trip was going to a 1.5-hour catholic wedding ceremony followed by a reception where they played Like a Prayer. It was like the punchline to the evening written explicitly for me.

Anyway, it was good times. Did I miss anything?
