The painting tells me when it is done. well, at least when i can stop and feel satisfied; if i choose to tinker beyond that point it's my own decision. but there is a certain moment the painting lets me know i can put my paintbrush down, and suddenly i know i'm done. before that point, i just don't feel satisfied.
I think the reason i like painting so much is that i (mostly) just physically create; i don't think too much. in fact, i often go on 'auto-pilot mode', and beyond mixing specific colors, my body just goes, and suddenly 4 hours have gone by and i'm pulling something out of the canvas that wasn't there before. and it feels wonderful when it's done.
