Hooking

I'm dead tired and still have homework to do before getting any sleep.  I've been agonizing over the opening scene of Gallery of Lies again.  Honestly, is that a surprise to anyone?  I tweaked it.  I changed the opening line at least a half dozen times.  I finally decided enough was enough and sent it off in the e-mail.  Hopefully it will get some good feedback in the contest.  It's definitely better than where I started with it, and with each agonizing revision, edit, and re-write I got a little closer to the real meat of the story.  This has been a tremendous learning process.  I have to say, I seriously underestimated the revision process.  I know better now.  :)

I have learned so much about opening hooks and where to place them.  I know what they should do, what they should consist of, what they should not consist of.  I made myself a little chart with notes about creating good hooks and hook placement, printed it, and taped it to the shelf above the monitor.  It stares me in the face and it has been such a help as I try to craft sentences at key points in the opening scene.

Life has interfered with my writing for the last couple of weeks and will probably continue to do so until my cousin's wedding is over.  I didn't complete last week's 2YN about setting yet.  I'm sure another lesson has been posted since then, but I haven't even looked at it.  I might be able to work on that a little this week.  We'll see.

Right now, homework calls.
