Illustration Friday Revision!
Topic: Depth.

After some good comments and critiques on my last version, I decided to make some changes to get the octupus to feel more underneath the girl. I also made it a vertical piece as to portray "depth" rather than "shallow-ness". Let me know what your favorite version is and why. :)

Woot is a good thing right?
I don't think people like this much. Buggin about perspective. To me, perspective isn't a huge issue in an illustration of this style... maybe I'm wrong though...

Thoughts? I know that you are good for it... and I need some strong pieces to submit to Picture Window.

Also, should I keep doing these digital illustrations or should I revert back and work in my "freehand/painterly/less smooth" style more. I didn't get much imput from Zach on what they expect other than to have a lot of kids from different cultures.

Hope your day is swell!

I would show them both, so they know you can do both... ill see if i can get more out of the zach later on tonight about ti all.

I like the perspective in both pieces, its simple enough, its not mind blowing and makes it fun... just like it should be.

I was thinking maybe 8 or 9 pieces in each style. The digital is just so much easier since I can do it on breaks at work a lot easier than a painting. I need some subject inspiration too... Illustration Friday helps, but it only pushes me to do one peice a week and I want to do more than that in order to have a strong set by the end of October.

From what you can tell... from the work that I have posted here... do you think I have a good shot at getting some work from them? Not sure what the competition is like or where I would fit in.

Yes I think you do.... and not just because I'm a friend.

Make sure to watch your line weights. Make them change up where needed, or make sure that they are thin/inked well enough to not overpower your design. (just a random comment)

Let me think of some suggestions and ill get ya back (aka, ill dig through the website and see what i can come up with for ya, cause i am 90% brain dead :P )

I agree about the line weights thing... I tend to get so wrapped up in just making it smooth that I forget about variations. Also, I've been having trouble with scanning and getting them to come out as smooth as I want them to. Any suggestions on that since what I am doing is mostly self-taught (and probably not very effective)?

I hate shaky-hand syndrome.

and um... thats all i know to ask.
zachs the cool one on the scanners, ill have him comment.

I'm scanning at 600 and then reducing to about 200 or 300. Maybe that's a big non-no but it seemed to be better than just scanning at 300 to start with.

That's all I really know too... but I didn't know if there was some sort of trick to it. My work looks good on the website but when you look at it unreduced, it looks like poo to me.

I can dig it I think...

My goal is to finish one ilustration per week... then maybe you can help me pick my strongest 10-15 (wink wink) and go from there.

From looking at the recent books I'm not TOO worried... but you never know what they will like and what they won't.

Any other advice you can give is GREATLY appreciated. I have low "art esteem". Probably a bad trait huh?

Oh yeah... do you like the first or the second version better? I'm leaning toward the second due to the reasons you brought up but was kinda bummed that it forced me to mute my colors. :(

i like the second... only because it makes it obvious that he is below her. The other its more of a aquatic scene... which is cool.

But because the colors were are bright as the girl above the water, it looked like he was too. But then again, ive been told i have something to say about everything.

And you know i love it no matter what!
