The dream came to her last night, blazing in 3-D technicolor, complete with auditory and ulfactory sensations. It was these types of dreams that would stay with her, long after the clinging webs of sleep have given way to the hustle of the day. Maybe because these dreams often were more substantial than the greyed down reality of her existance.
He was there with her through the night, like a specter haunting the hallways of her mind. His eyes always resting on her, reassuring her of his want of her despite the outward coolness that he displayed for the sake of the others.
Who these others were, or where they were for that matter, remains a mystery. The home was a large Southern plantation style replete with wrap around porch on the second floor, but judging by the condition of the place, it would be safe to assume that it was a rental, but who's place, she couldn't say. This was a building unlike any that she had ever been in before. Looking around at the dozen or so faces of those gathered there, the only one that was familiar was his. They all seemed to know one another, making her feel even more out of place and uncomfortable.
Needing to escape, and assuming no one would notice, she slipped out onto the balcony for a cigarette. There was a storm brewing on the horizon and moving in pretty quickly. The smell of ozone was wafting through the air, and the distant rumble of thunder echoed amoungst the swaying trees.
The sound of a car door broke through her mental reverie. As she turned towards the drive, she saw him pulling out in a dark vehicle. He was leaving her there, alone with strangers, without so much as a word.
As if in response to the overwhelming dispair that washed over her, the storm suddenly unleashed it's fury with a vehemence only seen during a major hurricane. Nature must have been on her side that night, because the car returned moments later for the storm made travel impossible. As he walked back into the house, he shrugged and offered her a cigarette, as if to say he was sorry for abandoning her.
The hours passed in seconds as they often do during dreams layered in disjointed images and sounds that at the time make perfect sense at the time. The storm had quieted down by this time, so she went to the window only to see a sight that could only be described as amazing. It was snowing. The world which only a few scant hours prior that had been awash in wind and rain was suddenly blanketed in a crystal white sugarland. Running outside, they all played like children, their cheeks flushed from the cold. This time, when she caught his eye, she knew that she would be all right.
When the alarm sounded, returning her swiftly back to reality, the intensity of his gaze and the gentle curve of his full lips as he smilled at her remained behind, lingering like a caress to comfort her through the dreariness of her day.
