I know most of you sysadmin types are lucky enough to not have to deal with windows, but it never hurts to ask...
Let's pretend we're setting up a Distributed File System under 2k3 Enterprise Server. Data exists primarily in two storage arrays attached via iSCSI to a server, let's call it Evil_Bitch. You put a DFS root (let's call it "DFSRoot") on your domain controller, which some nice person has named [god of mischief].
Now, I understand that the point is to show users DFSRoot and they don't have to worry exactly where everything else is in gory detail. This is useful because Evil_Bitch crashes all the time and shares have to be remapped to Less_Evil_Bitch on occasion. However, if all they see is DFSRoot, it doesn't matter where the shares technically come from.
But, uh, so if the storage arrays are attached via iSCSI to a server that crashes, and that server crashes, doesn't that make all the data unavailable anyway? Since, you know, it's no longer attached to a functioning server...?
I can read knowledge base articles until I'm blue in the face, and none of them address this issue...
