Incidentally, I first found out that my brain did that to my vision on it's own while staring at a grassy field during my freshman year of high school. Just starting at any diffuse pattern like bricks or leaves will cause it to begin to distort and ripple. I didn't take the drugs that did that until years later.
The neat thing about it was that the quadrants of the interior bit moved inwardly at different rates - it would be coencentric rings, then a spiral, back to rings... about fifteen seconds before it told me to look away, it seemed to devolve into white noise static.
