I mentioned awhile back that I hadn't been reading enough; this is still true. I did, however, manage to finish Scott Lynch's Red Seas Under Red Skies last night. Considering how much I had loved The Lies of Locke Lamora recommending it or loaning it to anyone who would listen or borrow, I took a shamefully long time to even start reading the second book in the series.
After finishing the book, one thing was clear. The series wasn't over. The author had left far too many tantalizing loose ends, and right from the beginning it had been labeled as The Gentleman Bastard Sequence, which more than implies more than two volumes. So, this morning, I did something that I'd been planning to do for ages: I googled Scott Lynch. Oh look!
scott_lynch is on LiveJournal!
Anyway, apparently he's already contracted for five books in the series, and the prologue of book three is already up on the website, although there is no projected release date for it. This doesn't actually bother me; of the authors I've followed over the years, there have been two approaches to release dates: Back in the day, Melanie Rawn gave projected release dates for all three volumes of her Exiles trilogy before the books were written. As I recall, the first volume was about on time, but the second was several years late, and the third still has yet to be written (although she has indicated
on her website that she would still like to finish the story sometime). On the other hand there are authors like JK Rowling, George RR "not your bitch" Martin, and Diana Gabaldon, who will not give a date until the manuscript is completed and sent off for editing. Of these two approaches, I vastly prefer the second; it just seems so much more... certain.
I haven't decided yet whether or not I'm going to read the excerpt. It apparently introduces the young lady that Our Hero has been pining, brooding, and generally making himself unbearable over for the ENTIRE SERIES thus far. The fact that we still haven't met her is one of those loose ends I was talking about earlier. LOVE IT!
I have decided on a choir for the fall. After 11 years, and the angstiest Tour of Ever, I think I'm finally ready to move on from the UAMC. So, this year, I will be singing with the Cosmopolitan Music Society Chorus. It's directed by a former assistant conductor of the Mixed Chorus, and apparently a goodly portion of their membership is UAMC alumni, so I think it'll be a good fit for me. Something else to look forward to!
