Will BP really pay the bill?

In response to President Obama's speech in Louisana and his comment that BP will pay the bill:

It's impossible to make up for all the devastation being caused. The wildlife being killed are irreplaceable, and we are making our own environment toxic. We are killing ourselves, and the corporate machines allow us to go on in blind bliss, enjoying the short-term benefits of a non-sustainable society while giving us a virtual person to point a finger at in times like this when the long-term effects become apparent. Even if BP pays heavily for this, the public will pay for it both directly from the devastation and indirectly from the economic effect, including rising gas prices. When companies take a hit from something like this, there's always transference of the blame and of the cost. The problem is not just with this spill, it is with the whole structure of our society. Corporations allow large groups of people to act with very little accountability. This is naturally very dangerous. Until we realize that, we will only be treating the symptoms of the illness, instead of finding the cure.

My thoughts go out to those affected directly by this. I hope all the efforts going on in the Gulf really help.
