REUs, new apt., etc.

In addition to running the math club this semester, studying to CLEP out of macroeconomics, taking 3 high-level math courses, and practicing piano like a maniac, I have been applying to math REUs across the country. These are summer research programs funded by the National Science Foundation, and they are very competitive programs, you might even say coveted among the most ambitious of undergraduates. They pay well. Many of the programs provide a significant stipend as well as housing and food, sometimes a travel allowance, and sometimes money to attend a conference to present your research.

It's a great opportunity.

And at this point, I've been accepted to two of them and have to figure out how to choose between the two. They're both great programs. I plan on calling around on Monday to ask questions and make a decision.

EEE!!!! I'm so EXCITED!!!!!!

Otherwise, things have been well. I'm still waiting on the account person to set up math club's account, so we can buy crochet hooks and supplies for hyperbolic models. I might go ahead and start discussion on geodesics and just hope that we'll have the funds available soon. I guess we could always make paper models if all else fails.

Everything is just so great right now.

I found two amazing girls to room with this upcoming year. The rent in the new apt. will be about the same as my rent now, split between the 3 of us. I will, however, have to move, but it's closer to campus. The place is definitely not as nice as my current one, but we're all very excited about dressing it up, making it homey. I'll have to get rid of a lot of possessions, but that's fine with me. I'm considering working for 4 months in Ireland in spring 2007 through this program. My rent is cheap still, and I'm going to be able to save a lot of money. I have to wait and see just how much, though. There's a good chance that I'll end up staying in Maine and working, but either way I'm really excited to move to a new place with some great people, even if it is just a mile away from where I live now.
