I'm a terrorist; didn't you know?

I got the Mayor's Art Show call for artists in the mail recently. Submission date is the 27th (or 28th or something around there) of August. I was planning on submitting the eye-mouth painting, but... it's weird having left something like that unfinished. I haven't even attempted to come back to it yet, and I don't know if I could feel "resolved" about it in just under a month and a half. However, and I know I say this every time I enter something, I think it has more of a chance of getting in than anything I've ever done. But then there's the framing, or whatever other means of making it display-ready (granted, with access to my dad's shop, I could whip up something basic and un-distracting). But I really want to enter something, because last year I didn't (being out of the country and all) and this is basically my last year to have a shot at it. (Unless I want to lie, which I could...)

I do know, however, that I'm going to try and go paint tomorrow. The random rural freeway-side landscape is something strangely novel to me now that I'm back. It's not like there's not rural landscapes in Spain, but I only was able to see them from bus windows. I had no car to go out, pick a spot with some run-down, abandoned, used-to-be-a-barn, and fields, and trees, and sky and mountains and whatever, and just paint. Fuck, the hills themselves are beautifully new in my eyes. Sevilla was flat. I see the hills now - it's wonderful. And clouds. Clouds are amazing. But anyway, gonna go buy some canvas boards (don't have any big enough) and grab my paints and easel and go wander. The top piece of my collapsable easel got lost in air transit, but I'll take some duct tape and hope for the best.

Um.... so this is interesting. Just opened my "art box" (cardboard box stuffed with paints, linseed oil, charcoal and whatnot that went to Spain and back with me). First off, it had some pretty new tape holding it closed, care of the Department of Homeland Security. And my jar of brush cleaner and can of gum terpentine are both gone. Fuckers. That shit's expensive. So, I'll be buying more supplies than planned, I guess. I now personally have something against this whole Homeland Security bullshit. Fuckin' a. I should make sure nothing else is missing...

Spanish customs are comfortably lax. Don't confiscate shit. Don't need ID to buy a bus ticket (try to do that in the US...). GOD FORBID I SHOULD HAVE ART SUPPLIES.
