I'm going to tell you guys a little story:
Every year my family has a family reunion at my grandpa's lake house. At his lake he has three boats: a small, green paddle boat (like the kind you can rent at a park), a little pontoon paddle boat, and a motorized pontoon boat. Now, my mom, my brother, and my nephew (my brother's son) were out in the little green one. So, me and my dad thought "Hey, why don't we take my niece on the pontoon paddle boat?" So, when the boat came back to dock (my cousins had commandeered it) I got on, then my niece (who's two, by the way), then two of my cousins got on the back.
When my dad tried to get on, he wasn't able to sit down with my niece in the middle, so I went to grab her to put her on my lap. When I looked down to pick her up, I noticed the front of one of the pontoons was dipping under the water. It didn't stop.
I had just got out from swimming with my niece, so she and I both had bathing suits and life jackets on. When I saw that pontoon going down, my first thought was "It's going to flip." My second was, "Oh my god, Kennedy!" (my niece). The boat flipped and all of us toppled into about 5 ft deep water. As soon as I hit the water, I did a mental head count. My two cousins had jumped off before it flipped and I saw them, then my dad stood up. This only took less than a second, after that I screamed, "Sissy's under the water!" twice. I looked back towards the boat and saw a pink thing and I grabbed it.
As soon as my niece was above the water, she looked at all of us like, "What the hell just happened?" I swam over to the dock and handed her to my cousin, grabbed my shoes (which had fallen off and, luckily, floated) and swam back over to the ladder. I climbed out and went back over to my cousin, who was still holding my niece, and took her from him. By then, my dad, uncle, and grandpa were flipping the boat back over. I turned around and headed back towards the end of the dock where the ladder was and looked over to my mom and brother, who were screaming my name. I heard them yell, "Is everyone alright?" I held up a thumb and my niece waved.
For the rest of the day, I was hailed as I hero. The only one injured was my dad, who was cut by the boat. I lost a beach towel and my dad's cell phone broke, but everyone was okay. The funny thing was, ten minutes later Kennedy asked, "Can we go swimming?"
