So I spend A LOT of time in my workshop (a.k.a my basement) building things like practice lightsabers, battle axes, shields, and of course, replica gun modifications.
Sometimes I think (well no, actually most times I know) I spend too much time down there and not enough time in the real world amongst friends and doing things. I look at the amount of items that are/have been collecting in the house, trying to find places to store them and often wonder "Why in the hell I am doing this?" Now are good amount of things are usually for other folks, who at some time or another placed the bug in my head to build something they would like to have or just plain see built (thanks Carlos
macrican ) Luckily for me, Carlos now has his own workshop, so some of my workload is now gone as he is building things himself.
Well last night I loaded the back of the KIA with 5 of the prop pistols and 2 rifles and headed to somewhere in New Jersey to a little (well OK not so little) place called "Studio 6". I was asked by
beritnewyork (Thank you again for having me along) if I would come down to a fashion show she was putting together and allow the young ladies (and Austin) to use some of the Steampunk replica weapons in their picture shoots. I was intrigued, hell no one usually asks me much of anything bout the things I build. So I agreed and thus last night I was off to Studio 6 where the Fashion show was to take place.
I have never been to a Fashion shoot before. Needless to say I was not sure what to expect. I go there early (like seriously early) and hung out while folks started showing up. They had 1 runway set up and about 7 other shooting sets (correct terminology??) arranged in a rather large warehouse area set up fairly nicely with a bar/lounge in the back area. Models started walking around and the Photographers started working shoots out. Before long things were hopping and a DJ cranked some majorly awesome tunes. Folks came by the table, looked asked questions and I got to talk a bit about my work. Even had an offer or two for future photo shoots and one possible interview. A few of the models not involved with the 11:00 photo shoot asked if they could borrow a replica for pictures and soon I was seeing a few of the replicas being toted about in sevral of the photo set areas.
Berit New York went on at about 11:00 and each of the models took one fo the replicas and out on the runway they did their Magic. After the runway, they were rotated between all the photo shooting stations and I got to watch each of the models do their thing either in small groups or solo around the room for the rest of the night.
It was a very cool experience, and not quite what I had in mind when I was riding down there yesterday afternoon (not that I had any idea what to expect). It was like a mix of club scene and major photo shoots. Having never been to a club before, it was something I would have only seen in a movie before last night. The nice part about it was, that things I had made, were a part of the nights magic and for perhaps what will be my 5 minutes of fame, so to speak, a part of me was out on those photo sets being photographed.
I am unsure if any of the models or photographers will see this entry, but it was a good night, amongst a very friendly crowd of strangers who made a slight;ly socially awkward old man feel at home amongst a very cool place of people.
My muse is back... She spoke loudly to me last night on the ride home,
