Animazement con report

Jun 07, 2010 17:57

Better post this before I forget everything! :D

Thursday:
+worked from 9:30 - 1:30, which sucked a lot
+pretty much jumped straight into the car out of work, played SoulSilver the entire way up to the con
+after we found somewhere to park, roomie went and got our badges and we got the Nashi viewing room table set up
+got changed into Kintaros for the Tokusatsu panel later on in the evening.
+started working on finishing the Tentomon plushie for vin_faucon , kept getting asked for cosplay repair emergency help. xDll
+connected with a lot of people with my PokéWalker!
+The panel was a lot of fun! A ton of people showed up, more than expected! And it was a heck of a lot more fun than Momocon's Tokusatsu panel, for sure.
+Thursday night at the con was really chill! Got to meet up with people and get to know a lot of new people.
+Slept under the desk like a troll. It started out comfortable but by the morning I was reeeeally regretting doing that...

Friday:
+showed up to the con in plain clothes! GASP!
+tended to the viewing room table for a while until we decided to change into our secret costumes...the Imagin-possessed Natsumi trio from Kamen Rider Decade! I was the Kintaros version (of course), zipchan  did the decora clusterfuck that is Ryuuta-Natsumi, and yugikitsune  was Urataros-Natsumi.
+Kintaros!Natsumi has a pretty costume! A very pretty costume. It was actually quite fun to make, and it wasn't horrible to wear, but OH MY GOD. I hate lamé fabric! GARGH. I also have to do some crazy repairs to that costume before it's wearable again
+After getting some really nice pictures in the costumes (we're even on ACP! OH SNAP!) and literally dragging a Tsukasa cosplayer into a photoshoot with us, we decided that we'd had enough of the costumes and changed out of them.
+I got changed into what is definitely my favorite costume of the whole convention - the new female trainer from Pokémon Black and White! And HOLY SNAP I actually got recognized! A LOT. I do love that costume, though, it's so comfortable and simple, and my hair is completely perfect for the character. :D
+At some point I went and signed yugikitsune  and I up for cosplay chess, and later found out that we'd gotten in! Somehow. xD
+I table-watched for a good portion of the night, and got a lot of pictures. At some point we went for dinner. I think I beat Morty in SoulSilver at some point in the night. Very low-key!
+FINALLY finished the commissioned Tentomon plushie for vin_faucon . I got a lot of people going "...wait, aren't you a Pokémon trainer? Why do you have a Digimon?", to which I replied with either "Oh, he's just a Ledyba with an identity crisis" or "I've decided to expand over into other fandoms. Yugioh is next!"
+Somewhere close to 1am the rave generated enough heat and kicked up enough dust that it literally triggered a fire alarm. oO So we ended up leaving a little earlier than expected.

Saturday:
+after getting up and getting into costume, we basically had enough time to get over to the con center, help set up the viewing room table, and then we had to report in for Cosplay Chess!
+of course nothing can top 2009's cosplay chess, for me at least. Winning the game as Tsubaki was a ton of fun, mostly because of my Black Star's antics and how I got to beat up Master Roshi. Kekeke. >3
+This year it was back to being a pawn, but yugi and I were a most AWESOME pawn - male and female Ranma from Ranma 1/2! Being one pawn was actually quite entertaining. We got to do our "gender switching" gimmick with some help from a "Mudkip", and even though we died without doing anything, it was still pretty fun. Plus we had "Oyaji" come on to drag off our carcasses, but instead tried to extort our opponent for some money. xD
+After cosplay chess I had some down-time, so I used the time to explore the Dealer's Room and Artist's Alley. I ended up finding two kids figures that I really wanted - a Surskit and a Chimecho, both in pretty good condition! I also got some Digimon swag from one artist in the Alley. Oh, Digimon, you make my wallet and my paypal cry. T_T
+Got changed into Ling later on in the day and went for dinner with my RanFan. After that we pretty much just sat around by the viewing room table hanging out for a while.
+Later in the night we popped into the shonen-ai panel and actually stayed for a while...or at least long enough to find out that when texting, if you have T9 autocomplete turned on, it will auto-complete the word "yaoi" to the word "wang". No, seriously, try it.
+Late night shenanigans were fun! I got to chat with a bunch of people, got pictures of myself as Ling passed out in various locales throughout the con, etc. We ended up with a pretty big group of people hanging out by the viewing room table on Saturday night.

Sunday:
+I had ENERGYYYYY. I don't even know WHY, I just DID. MAN did I ever have energy!
+I'll just go ahead and say that Sunday was possibly my favorite day of the whole convention, partly because:
+I wore the Pokémon trainer costume all day on Sunday. Comfy costume = win always, of course, but when it's one that's actually rather recognizable, but not so popular that it's EVERYWHERE...those are without a doubt my favorite types of costumes!
+We hauled all of our luggage down to the table, then went to crispy creme for a donut run. Oh donuts...
+After eating the donuts (I've never felt more unhealthy in my life, fyi) yugikitsune , vin_faucon , hcumuoyevol  and nitrokun  had random Hetalia antics as England, America, Canada and France. I followed them around partly because I was bored and partly because it was actually rather entertaining to watch their various antics.
+At some point we went to McDonalds for the standard America/Big Mac OTP picture. Reiterating that I've never felt more unhealthy in my life, but I didn't EVEN care.
+The 3pm Pokémon photoshoot rivals the Soul Eater shoots from last year as my favorite (big) photoshoot EVER! I'm definitely going to every Pokémon shoot I can make it to from now on, it was a ton of fun, and there was a very impressive turnout!
+First gen, of course, had a ton of representation, 2nd gen got a lot too partly due to nostalgia and the recent remakes. 3rd gen and 4th gen were...sad. But man, that 5th gen, the turnout was abysmal! There was only one lone trainer! Who could that have been? :D
+After the shoot, the con really started to wind down. zip and I hit the artist's alley right as it was closing and she got me this really cute snow globe from one table that had an assortment of Ice type Pokémon in it, including my personal favorite, Articuno
+We left the con pretty late (around 4pm, I think?) after closing the viewing room down about an hour later than we should have. The drive home was pretty uneventful, with a stop in at yet another McDonalds (or was it a Burger King? I can't remember) and a lot of conversation, and a lot of me still dressed as a Pokémon trainer...while playing Pokémon. :D

Overall, I had a lot of fun this time around! Not doing a skit made AZ soooooo much more relaxing of a con, if not a tiny bit more fun. Sitting the viewing room really wasn't bad either, we drew a huge crowd both for the actual anime we were screening and for the random video games we had set up outside or just the mob of people that hung around talking in the later hours of the con. I rather liked having the viewing room table as a "base of operations", so to speak.

I also had a ton of fun walking around connecting with people with the Pokéwalker all weekend. And all the Pokémon cosplayers had ones in their walker that actually made sense, like a Nurse Joy with a Chansey or the various Gym Leaders with their signature Pokémon. I also logged  TON of steps - I normally get about 10,000 on days where I work, but at the con I was getting 13-14000 per day just from the sheer amount of walking I did. Crazy! :D

Overall:
Years I've been to Animazement: 6!
Costumes worn: 5
Pictures taken: 180!
Swag: Surskit and Chimecho figurines, Digimon stickers, Ice Pokémon snow globe, Troll-chan Kaitou Daiki keychain
Steps on PokéWalker: about 55,000
Kills in Cosplay Chess: 0... :( Wait! We killed a summon, does that count?
Years in Cosplay Chess: 4...wow. oO
Times Mistaken as a Boy (as Ling): 3
Fangirl/boy reactions to my costumes: a lot!
Favorite costume of the con: Female trainer from Black/White

I don't want to say that this was the most fun I've had at a con, but it was honestly up there. :D

...oh, and vin_faucon , do you think you could do me a favor and send me any pictures you have of Tentomon? I forgot to take some when I finished him...and of course if he needs any repairs, bring him to me. I'll take care of him! :D
