Heinlein himself has said that he vowed "never to 'write down' nor to adopt a patronizing attitude" toward the youthful reader and added provocatively:
"I have held to that rule and my books for boys differ only slightly from my books for adults-the books for boys are somewhat harder to read because younger readers relish tough ideas they have to chew and don't mind big words-and the boys' books are slightly limited by taboos and conventions imposed by their elders."

He may have repeated that point elsewhere in his career using the more glib manner of the paraphrase about "leaving out the sex" but I would guess this is the source. The citation in this book points to _More Junior Authors_ edited by Muriel Fuller p 109 for the Heinlein quote. I looked that up as well, and the quote is accurate, and there's nothing more of relevance.
(By the way, while at the libraries today I found some good books for resale in the sale racks, so it made my trip worth it in more ways than one!)
